Reloading Tips According To Dicehorn #24

Recommended Posts

Something Completely Different

I was once invited over to a friend's place for a bit of a plink and general chit chat -usually about reloading. He walks down the field to a high (safe) hedge and promptly starts putting up little bits a scrap paper with a red circle in it .............pinned with a drawing pin to a large tree - a tree for heavon's sake. Sorry but I'm not going to let a centre fire loose on that poor tree. All hurt he returns to the tree and impales my target on a convenient blackberry thorn. Needless to say first shot and the impaled target fell out of sight.

I assumed he would have something like a permenant/portable target holder. So the next day I set about making a portable target holder for him - that was over 10 years ago and just like Trigger's (Only Fools and Horses) broom, he still has it although all the wood has been replaced a few times. For anyone who wants a simple portable target holder - here is mine - dont forget the all important backstop...................not a tree!! Cutting measurements at end of this thread.

Another tip re targets. If (like me) you prefer to make your own targets, can I suggest that you include parallel black lines to the bull and at least one vertical line to the bull. Reason - very few of us are able to repeatably shoot at a target without canting the rifle slightly for some shots. If you had the use of the most accurate rifle and five rounds ever made and you fired three with the rifle straight and the other two with the rifle canted, the five shot group would look terrible. So by keeping your crosshairs in line with these black lines you are guaranteeing to be shooting all bullets with the same rifle mount.

Dont shoot with both eyes open? Try it - it made me a far better shot even though I shoot off the right shoulder and am totally left eye dominant. If your rifle has started to make you flinch and you cant go back to say a rim fire to rebuild confidence then shooting with both eyes WIDE open is the way to go. Comments invited!!!

You will need the following to make this target

Wood - all 2 by 1

2 @ 61 cm
2@ 58 cm with one end pointed
4 @ 23 cm (ensure the middle one will support A4 paper)
2 small hinges + small screws
16 screws at 75 mm

I have always shot rifles with both eyes open and I am right shoulder, completely left eye dominant as well. I have to shoot a shotgun with the left eye closed just before the shot.

Yes Cliff, we are certainly dis advantaged compared to 'normal shooters' !!

Actually I do shoot shotgun both eyes open and having known my eye problem for many years have adapted to knowing that birds on my left need little lead but birds on my right need a heck amount more lead - birds overhead have to be aimed well to the right to make contact - sounds bizarre but I originally found that with one eye shut with a shotgun I lost the perspective of distance. I occasionally shoot on the commercial shoots where our birds are extremely tall but on a good day can shoot better than 3 to 1 - when I miss it has more to do with missing the line of the bird, not my eyes..
