gun smoke 0 Posted September 6, 2007 Report Share Posted September 6, 2007 hi just got 5 month old whippet x greyhound colly the lad who had her before me has given her some dropped rabbits to take and when i am out she has chased 1 or 2 but has not caught them and i let her take a mixi rabbit.this is my first lurcher and always had terriers should i keep letting her chase after them or wait till she is abit older and stronger i dont want her get bored ? Irish Lurcher 1,013 Posted September 6, 2007 Report Share Posted September 6, 2007 Five months old and chasing rabbits, I would hold off for a few months yet, maybe till the dog is 12 months old and then ease him into it slowly. You must think of the damage that be caused to his young bones while chasing rabbits at such speed, give him time to develop, let him grow and strengthen naturally. You could very well cause untold damage at this stage if you continue to run him on rabbits. I hope this helps. John Quote Link to post
marko 30 Posted September 6, 2007 Report Share Posted September 6, 2007 yep same as above let the young dog play and basically be a pup at that age it can go out on the lead and watch the others at work then it will get the idea,you can then start the dog off lightly 10 -12 mth on the odd bunny not over doing it there is other things that you can do in the mean time ie stock breaking call commands retrieving so its not all doom and gloom get the dog ready for its introduction. good luck mate.
