Country Joe 1,411
Not going as far back, about 30 years ago i spoke to a farmer who was then in his eighties, He told me about a squad of rabbit trappers from the Highlands who would live on the farms trapping rabbits pre myxi using Gin traps, they then would move on to the next farms travelling round and staying he described their Dogs as long legged Terriers. and some had Collie Dogs. again he said they were long in the leg. keepitcovert 842
No doubt that such early dogs were the result of some form of herding dog or drovers dog such as the legendary smithfield, good working terriers were around in the nineteeth century bred specifically for the rat pits, i doubt in those days any dog that couldnt earn its keep would have been around for long most people lived on the breadline. Sirius 1,391
It's just a raggedy old cross breed, made from dogs before they were a breed as such. Been around as long as men have hunted game I should think. If you look in 'The Hunting book' by Gaston Phoebus which was written in the 14th and 15th century in France, running dogs are very typey and used to hunt alongside other hounds for various quarry. It's a good book if your a dog book nerd like me. Edited October 22, 2013 by Sirius 4 Quote Link to post

birddog 1,354
but way back then it was the landed gentry that went hunting and enjoyed sport, a dog that looked like it could hunt owned by the poorman was handicapped or worse, i believe thats where the term curtailed comes from, to my logic a collie / herding / cur type trained by someone who knew dogs and the countryside would go unnoticed by the law but provide for its owners probably using gate or long nets Quote Link to post
jerry attrick 264
originally you wouldn't have wanted a lurcher like the type we have today, it would stand out to much as a running dog, and get you under suspition straight away before youve even started, you needed something that don't look like a running dog, mmm i guess that what i could do with these days 3 Quote Link to post
