STRANGER 948
Lot of shit talked on this thread. Sounds like a young lad to me and could be fooled into thinking this dog will cost him close to 500 quid before it even gets started! A pup can cost you feck all depending on who you know jabs, wormer and frontline can be cheap enough if you shop around and cost of feeding can be brought down if you supplement with cheap or free meat and scraps. Everything else ( fancy kennels, boxes, leads, expensive lamps) are all just material and not always necessary. Take things 1 step at a time. Just my opinion based on experience. 9 Quote Link to post
BIGLURKS 874
I'd avg 200 a dog then 30 a month on food for first 12 month then 17 a month after plus about a 40 a year on wormers and fle stuff and you have kennel on too if dog is outside a good 300/400 depends if you got a pal that's a joiner could be cheaper or if in the house 40 on a crate then you could pick a k lamp set up for about 150 and then uve got petrol depends on we're your going and how much spare time all them estimates could be made lower if your willing too go cheaper on certain things like food kennel wormers just a high estimate 40 a year mate what ya using johnsons spot on lol. frontline is every 4 weeks you get three in a box so thats that 4 boxes in the year which comes to 108 bar and thats without wormer mate drontal which i use 2 1/2 every three months which comes to ten a year priced at 39 bar. If your using these and getting um at that price 40 then pm me where abouts cheers pal. buy in bulk off the internet scout about you get cheap deals think the last lot I got was 100 od that 3 boxes of large spot on 5 boxes for the smaller stuff and wormers for all for the year drontal xl that way one tablet does 2 small dogs and also the bigger dogs got 7 dogs and I only spot on every 3 month dogs also get fle collars 3 pound a collar during the spring and summer months Quote Link to post
Hot Meat 3,109
Sounds like a lot of folk trying to put off a youngster from getting a dog... Let's face it, how many folks on here had all the gear they needed before they started. Go ok I been hunting years now and there's still a few odds an sods I could be doing with... get a pup and you will have around a year to get things like a lamp, although the pup will obviously need food and a few treatments before then, hardly need to be a lotto winner to own working dogs... anything spent on them is a small sacrifice to pay when things come good and you and the mutt are out in the wind and rain doing what we love best.. 4 Quote Link to post

paulf 820
after the cost of the pup which could be cheap enough if you look around lamp can wait though you can pick them up cheap on here I did for £50 ,you don't need a £ 300 lamp mate believe me , as for food you can get a bag of gain for £ 10/15 ..collars leads cheap enough car boot sales sell some tidy gear too ..when I first started I would go over the school after closing and get some of the scraps off the caretaker for nothing ,so don't be put off having a dog mate it can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be..obviously jabs are a must but again you can get them cheap same with flea and wormers you just need to know the right people ... 2 Quote Link to post

Some dogs never need a vet, some do more than most, insurance aint exactly a crippling cost, but it is an extra monthly bill, if you can afford it tho it gives some peace of mind. Just out curiosity, how many wee pound nuggets do all you a lads set aside in a bank account or piggy bank for just in case emergencies? I'm betting not many put anything away... Hot Meat 3,109
Aye most do mate, but it'family money like you say if my kids need it and dogs need it, it'll go to kids no ifs no buts no coconuts lol I suggest insurance, it gives me peace of mind, what I'm saying tho is, if your serious you'll find a way of making it work, if not do without, but you certainly don't need to be rich to have lurchers, like most things in life it can be done with the basics but throw some money at it and it does become a bit easier.. 3 Quote Link to post
