Was just thinking that,

But to answer question seen decent looking pups on line for £-150 then sack of dog food a month £12 plus or get friendly with a butcher and feed it butchers waste and handful of dog biscuit will cut costs down,

Add on wormer/ flea treatment can't remember how much that is .

drontal 3.90 each 1 x 10kg frontline £27 three treatments

I'd avg 200 a dog then 30 a month on food for first 12 month then 17 a month after plus about a 40 a year on wormers and fle stuff and you have kennel on too if dog is outside a good 300/400 depends if you got a pal that's a joiner could be cheaper or if in the house 40 on a crate then you could pick a k lamp set up for about 150 and then uve got petrol depends on we're your going and how much spare time all them estimates could be made lower if your willing too go cheaper on certain things like food kennel wormers just a high estimate

40 a year mate what ya using johnsons spot on lol. frontline is every 4 weeks you get three in a box so thats that 4 boxes in the year which comes to 108 bar and thats without wormer mate drontal which i use 2 1/2 every three months which comes to ten a year priced at 39 bar. buy in bulk off the internet scout about you get cheap deals think the last lot I got was 100 od that 3 boxes of large spot on 5 boxes for the smaller stuff and wormers for all for the year drontal xl that way one tablet does 2 small dogs and also the bigger dogs got 7 dogs and I only spot on every 3 month dogs also get fle collars 3 pound a collar during the spring and summer months

You know what your buying from the vet pal these cheap and nastys of the net is a no go for me. Think too much of the dog to be just buying any old shit that might of been bashed upto f**k.

when i started i had feck all except a wee collie x pup and a self appointed right to roam, made nets out of all sorts of rubbish but they worked, used a bike repair kit on wellies, home made lamp (jumping the fence at the local breakers) and walked everywhere.....didn't think about the cost most things were acquired (thats a laugh) one way or another........if the instinct and desire are there you'll find a way

suppose really , with weiging up (food, injurys+ vets, travel to hunt) you always got your hand in your pocket.Maybe if you catch enough rabbits and sell few might pay toward your fuel, but most of us dont lol , so its not a cheap hobby .? But most do it just to see the there dogs work, so if you like lurchers give it a go , either way they make nice pets to have around + bit of sport

Costs me less to "run" the dogs now than it would if I had a big night on the piss once a week.

When I started, a long time ago, the cost was part of the family budget, and seldom made a profit

Nowadays I'm making a little money on the rabs but all the costs involved as previously stated, you'll be lucky to break even.

Just go out and enjoy it, feck the pub and clubs etc.

Lot of shit talked on this thread. Sounds like a young lad to me and could be fooled into thinking this dog will cost him close to 500 quid before it even gets started!

 

A pup can cost you feck all depending on who you know jabs, wormer and frontline can be cheap enough if you shop around and cost of feeding can be brought down if you supplement with cheap or free meat and scraps.

 

Everything else ( fancy kennels,boxes, leads, expensive lamps) are all just material and not always necessary. Take things 1 step at a time.

 

Just my opinion based on experience.

I'd say running a dog is a cheap hobby I've done scrambling, land rover off road/ green lanes,bodybuilding, cycling. All of which I've thrown 1000's at so dogs are cheap really. But remember you can just put a dog in the shed once youve finished with it.

Not to clever a post for on hear.

 

Find yourself a good pup from someone who looks after their own. Take your time and work out what you need and best suited to run on your chosen quarry.

Feed it the best you can afford and most important, enjoy the little bugger through all the trials and tribulations. Be careful who you run with and always remember loose lips sink ships.
