Jack Beresford 0
Hi, I'm just starting to take an interest in hunting having done some bush beating, so was hoping if anyone could tell me what cheap, all round gun, would be good to start off with? Quote Link to post
Cliff Ray 185
The Vulcan Phalanx ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppI367_v5xY )is pretty good Other than that you need to be a bit more specific as to what you want to do with it. Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
For general target shooting and vermin shooting the HW95 is an ideal starter rifle, you can pick them up secondhand fairly cheaply! Probably the best break barrel spring powered there is! 2 Quote Link to post
Craig Fosse 286
Jack I know a lot of people say it and the phrase is not often not adhered to but PLEASE, stretch your budget as far as you can and buy once not twice... From someone who ha been there and brought cheap, spent money on tuning it up and wishes he could have spent all that money differently because I would probably have a decent second gun i my cabinet rather than one I look at and wish It wasn't there Edited October 21, 2013 by Craig Fosse 5 Quote Link to post

Max Yells-James 34
Like others have said you can't go wrong with a Weihrauch but the BSA Lightning is also a very nice, accurate, and light gun. 1/2 inch groupings at 25 yards. I've had mine for 5 years and nothings gone wrong with it yet. Obviously mine is an older model but newer ones can only be better! Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,587
Jack I know a lot of people say it and the phrase is not often not adhered to but PLEASE, stretch your budget as far as you can and buy once not twice... From someone who ha been there and brought cheap, spent money on tuning it up and wishes he could have spent all that money differently because I would probably have a decent second gun i my cabinet rather than one I look at and wish It wasn't there That is perfect, goodsense advice. You can buy a lot of guns that offer a cheap way into shooting. These aren't so bad if you find you don't like the sport as much as you thought you would and you can write off not a lot of outlay cost. But, from your post, I think you have already had a good taste of shooting with others and want a decent rifle of your own to get started with. Think less about a budget and more of what you would ideally like from your rifle. Accuracy and reliability are the uppermost requirement. You don't want to be waiting hours for a rabbit to pop up, only to miss it or be stuck indoors on a great hunting day while something on your rifle is being fixed for the umpteenth time. A second hand quality rifle like a Weihrauch, Daystate or Air Arms PCP or Spring rifle makes a lot more sense for your hunting needs than a brand-new cheapo-built clunker costing the same money and less than half the capability! Shop wise and shop for what you need. Not what you can only afford in your pocket on one day in a month Simon Quote Link to post
Craig Fosse 286
On another addition tho mate, remember the rifle isn't just the be all and end all, ur talking about hunting... Remember to budget for some hunting hear too. Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
I would avoid the BSA Lightning, they have a reputation for being a thorn in the side of the BSA brand, they have been built down to a cost and then sold for a price BSA can get away with. I would look for a decent secondhand HW95 or 99! Even though I am a big fan of a certain budget brand, if you want a rifle to enjoy and last, buy an HW (I just bought a 77 that is 20 years old, probably on it's original original spring and washers, still making 10.75 ft lb and with that superb Rekord trigger)... sweet pea 2
Great thread is this and good advise from Craig as I know to my cost, I bought cheap and twice, I just wish that I had found this site before I bought, ah well we live and learn. Quote Link to post
barrywhite 282
hw 95 or hw 97 or 77 1 Quote Link to post
Astral 253
I went for the SMK carbine hunter, which is a cheap fairly good starter rifle( (I know many will argue this! just my thoughts on it lol) . I very much like the gun and continue to have a lot of fun with it BUT if I had managed to stretch my budget a little further I would have gone for a HW95 for sure. I was very limited financially then. Depends what your after, I wanted a target practise rifle that could still be used on small vermin like rats/pigeons/bunnies when I got permission in the future.
