Tyla 3,179
Herdwick and I used to have a couple of hours bushing every Sunday but due to the lack of rabbits over the last few seasons its been let slide a bit in favour of other things - its not so much not catching that spoils it but not seeing anything every week got a bit much! After securing a new bit of ground we went out for a look this morning and had a good few hours. Herwicks team consisted of, in no particular order, Snuff, Lizzie, Trilby, Bristle and Tanner, all JRT bitches, Midge, beddy/whip/grey and his granddaughter Tegan. I had Willow, bitsa lurcher, and Ollie my mongrel terrier. We did a couple of hedgerows and a long shore with a big ditch in the middle. We had a few good hunts with a couple of close calls and some good runs, a nice change from the hard to find and well educated rabbits on Herdwicks farm! The weekly bushing has created a race of super rabbits who know exactly how to avoid terriers, hate breaking cover and spend every Sunday hiding in their buries! The bag consisted of one Rabbit flushed by the terriers and caught by Willow, one caught in cover and retrieved by Snuff and an accidental hen pheasant who got mugged by the terriers and Midge. We flushed rather a lot of pheasants and I'll be getting in touch with the landowner to make sure its not causing any problems, hopefully not and he could have a lovely morning shooting if he kept 50 yards in front of us! It was a thoroughly enjoyable morning, hopefully plenty more to come! Edited October 20, 2013 by Tyla 18 Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
When I read this bit: The weekly bushing has created a race of super rabbits who know exactly how to avoid terriers, hate breaking cover and spend every Sunday hiding in their buries! I thought, that has to be me! I know just how you feel Trouble is my rabbits are even worse: they have to contend with us every day of the week since my walks have been restricted by a brand new nature reserve 1 Quote Link to post
Scallywag 78
What a great pack! Like you, I can cope ok with coming home empty handed, but get disheartened if we don't even see anything! Quote Link to post

herdwick 52
Spoke to the landowner this morning. He put a couple of feeders out because he likes to see "the odd pheasant" about! Told him what we had flushed and offered to act as beaters for him. He said he would talk to the boys and get back to me. Quote Link to post

I cant believe he didn't know it was holding all those birds! More birds there than some of the drives I've beaten on! Quote Link to post
herdwick 52
Nice read Tyla good day lads. Herdwick how's the lurcher doing I did like the look of her. Thanks Westy. Its sods law. After 30 years of being over run with rabbits and having pure-bred collies (although they did pretty well in the rabbit catching stakes!) I go out and get my ideal lurcher.....and all the rabbits disappear! Having said that, she does what I want her to do, thats as much as anyone can ask! Quote Link to post

They are all bitches except the big red dog right at the back. The one on the right is small but couldn't say exactly, she's herdwick's bitch, sure he'll put her height up Quote Link to post
