matt101 115 Posted October 19, 2013 Report Share Posted October 19, 2013 Hello, I managed to pick up a new bit of permission, its 500 acres and has a good amount of rabbits on it. One section of hedge is stuffed with holes 200 + and when the cover is FINALLY down there should be some good days from it. Im pretty fortunate as the farmer has given me permission to take the dog with me and also to lamp with her when she is older so pretty pleased with that, not to mention im allowed to shooting pigeon etc too! Anyway, this is the second time out ferreting for my 7 month old collie/whippet/grey, the first time, done elsewhwere, was pretty poor with only one 1/2 grown rabbit being bolted which slipped the net and the pup was looking in the other direction lol. This time my hunting partner, his 5 month old cocker pup and i decided to do a few smaller warrens as the main hedge was very thick with cover and would be a nightmare to deal with with two young pups. First off we drew a blank in a little copse which looked good but nothing happened so not quite sure why this didnt produce. we put down just under 45 nets and got sweet F.A for it but thats the way it goes sometimes. We knew that as the main areas were too thick we'd have to do some more accessable warrens, so we headed for a fenceline along a maize crop which held a few smaller warrens. We carefully put the stop nets up and set out the purse nets trying to minimise damage to the maize (plenty there from the rabbits anyway, but we tried our best). Both pups were starting to take more notice in the nets and ferrets and before the rabbits bolted my pup was showing lots of interest in the warrens, her ears were swivelling this way and that listening to the ruckus that was happening below ground. Soon enough we had two rabbits in the nets! I let my pup grab hold of the rabbits and she released them when told to, however she would not leave them alone after they were dispatched, the smell was just to much for her! 3 Quote Link to post

matt101 115 Posted October 20, 2013 Author Report Share Posted October 20, 2013 (edited) Joe777 : cheers, the ground should be pretty decent, there is a lot of rabbit activity about its just difficult to locate the warrens with all this cover about, can't wait till the pup is old enough for lamping as this ground should be pretty good for that. Yeh she is starting to mark a bit but I'm not sure how trustworthy she is at the moment, time will tell. Both her dam and her sire were collie/whippet/grey. Mouse trap: yeh iv had a black and a ginger before but this colour is new to me, it will be interesting to see if this ground holds anymore surprises. She;s 8 months old.Coming on tidy.Had her first Rabbit last week.Messed about with the Retrieve though two laps of the Field .But i was Expecting That what with it being her First Rabbit.
