buy an old remi chuck the barrel away and get a shilling barrel put on it

Out of those makes, I'd expect excellence regardless of the one I picked, they've all been at it long enough after all.

 

Ultimately, a Tikka, Steyr, Anschutz or Mauser may have the slight edge on Browning as they only make rifles so all of their R&D money goes into...rifles. Browning does them all.

 

If you're thinking custom, another to consider is a Tikka M595. Old rifle but the action is one of the most popular for custom jobs.

Don't much care for the 6.5x55, its just too close to a .243 without the flat trajectory, just buy a Howa/Weatherby vanguard and enjoy, in .25-06

got to beg to differ charlie , but then again opinions vary , had a couple of 243,s in the past and various other cals .......as a 1 all round rifle i would not swap my 6.5x55 for any of them tbh only my opinion though ....maybe i have just found a rifle that suits me right down to the ground

Well for what it's worth, my choice for a single calibre (I have 4 so what do I know), would be the 7x57, the problem (for you)

is finding a rifle in that calibre (Heym oh yes).

There is a massive difference between .222 and .308 in terms of overall ballistic performance, so anything in the middle will be a compromise.

 

If you reload then the choice is a little wider, but I see no debate that the .243 has to be the choice if you don't (and almost certainly if you do as well).

 

I consider it the best long range Fox calibre available and it WILL drop any deer in this country easily if you do your part.

 

I run .223, .243 and .308, they all have their uses!

6.5 x55 all the way. Low recoil VERY accurate and can load up to 160gr if required. I have a Tikka T3 in 6.5 and it's a great rifle.

I'd suggest taking a look at Sako as well if your budget can stand it.

 

Sako are made by the same people as Tikka - all part of the Beretta group these days although I believe they were long established firearms compnaies before coming under the Beretta wing.

 

Quality at Sako as superb as is accuracy. I'm not saying there's nothing better, but for the money you get a very good gun.

 

Worth considering the Sako 85 Hunter as well as Tikka T3 therefore and the other brands mentioned above.

 

Personally I have an affinity towards laminated stainless heavy barrelled guns, but that's a personal thing. I'm not a fan of synthetics.

 

A Sako 85 Hunter in Laminate stainless with set you back a little under £1500 for the bare gun.

Has anyone got any views on savage rifles.

They seem to be very good value, have a good name across the pond for accuracy, if i was considering getting c/f again i'd look at them.

Another vote for 6.5x55 here, much more versatile than .243. It has a great choice of bullets which have a good bc and its easy to load for. If buying new i would look at a Tikka T3 laminate, the laminate stock is a lot more stable than the crap injection moulded synthetic and even the walnut.

 

Personally i would not bother going to Sako as once you start getting towards that sort of price you can pick up a good used Tikka 695 action and have a krieger barrel fitted and drop it into a decent stock fornnot a lot of difference in price.
