Ferreting With The Pup

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am thinking of going ferreting for the first time with my first lurcher pup (recipe for disaster possibly haha)

But I am after some advice. He is 5 months old and I just aimed to get him out used to being around the nets and ferrets and such. He is spot on with the ferrets in the garden and has picked up 2 mixi rabbits so I'm hoping a little outing ferreting will do him some good also. Anyone think this is too young or any other good pointers?

Help is much appreciated

if you take him keep him calm and as stedy as posible............make sure if any bolt and miss the net dont let go of him as running at 5month old is not going do anything other than ruin him mate.when the rabbit hits the net let him have a hold of it but dispatch it instantly in the net and repeat to him the comand HOLD then take it of him and reset the nets.have him sitting in between your legs and kep stroking his sides tio keep him calm.this is waht i do on there first couple of ferreting trips anyway..

i take mine out late September, he was 6 months let him see the ferrets working hearing the sounds from bellow ground, and watching the rabbits hitting the nets, with a bit of luck they will start marking.

the photo above he had just turned 7 months, on his last two outings he has marked occupied burys I have ferreted.

coming on good.

Rabbiting dogs dont learn in a kennel, best of luck with your tyke.

Lovely looking dog that mate, mine doesn't look all too dissimilar at the moment. I have an old thread with some puppy photos but no recent ones of him.

All the best with your dog mate,

I don't know how the whole fractions work but the dam was a beddy greyhound deerhound greyhound x greyhound and the sire is a whippet greyhound. Reckon he's gonna make a big ish dog.
