beast 1,884
i have used this method for years, and always have pups toilet trained in a matter of days. perhaps just luck, but i like the method first, when i get a new pup i take a couple of weeks off work. second, i keep the pup in a crate if i'm not about or for it to rest. third, EVERY TIME it wakes up i take it out immediately, and wait for it to empty. this might take a minute or an hour, i simply wait. if it is the sort of pup that gets distracted as soon as it gets out so forgets to empty, i keep it on a lead and walk up and down, up and down, slowly until it goes. fourthly, as i see the pup squat i say "herry up", and repeat as it actually empties. next step, say "hurry up" as soon as i let it outside, once it is responding to this command, it is job done. this whole taking outside process is done not only when the pup wakes up, but as bpr says every time it eats, drinks, stops in the middle of a game, in short every time it does some different actions. this methiod means you have to spend a lot of time for the first few days, and need eyes like a hawk for the warrning signs of a pup about to make a mess but this means also good bonding with the puppy and you will get the job completed before you know it Does it make a difference if you use 'herry up'... or 'hurry up' ... Good post .... very important to say herry or hurry at the right stage. if you get it wrong then the pup will run upstairs and shit on your bed.......

Surely you're just encouraging the dog to piss in the house though Ross? How did you transition from the pads to outside? Perhaps I never made it clear, I don't let them just piss about the house, or encourage it, they get put out when they wake, when they fed, when they sniff about etc same as some have said on here but regardless there will be times when there's an accident or you miss it and I'd much rather them piss on they disposable pads than just carpet etc. So the first piss/ accident they have I soaked it up with the mat and left it in the same spot so if they had an accident it was there on the mat and they associated the mats with one of the places to relieve themselves. Regardless if they had an accident or not the mats got moved over a short period of time towards the door and eventually outside the door and left there for a few days so if you missed the signs and the pup was looking to relieve itself they were scratching whining at the door to get outside or to the mat which would now be outside anyway, hope that clear it up and no one thought I was just letting my dogs piss where they pleased? With this method mine were scratching to get out within 2 weeks of coming home, aye there was the odd accident but always at the door and was down to us not being quick enough.
