BOLIO1 1,078
Afraid to handle a dog?....Indeed I hunted for years with guy who would go purple if you asked him to hold a terrier...and forget about ferrets ha ha! 1 Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
I dug 4 foxes Sunday morning for 3 digs in a place where they're not a problem and gets heavily lamped. I ended all 3 digs the same way. No gun used (even though I had one) , no strong dog, no handling, I just sat back and let them walk out by me. Terrier worked well each time and lovely healthy specimens allowed to run for another day, what more could a terrierman ask for. It's not always practical to release them but it's definitely the nicest way to end a dig. JMHO. 11 Quote Link to post

JMHO. its very sporting what you did, fair play. but it always give the antis the ammo they need with the argument of if you didn't dispatch it then why bother harassing it by digging it in the 1st place. but its nice to see them run. neil cooney 10,416
Your right, the anti's have used that against us in the past. But, coarse fishing is all about catch and release and it's becoming more and more common for game anglers to practice catch and release. Hare coursing under rules is never about the kill but all about the chase. Hunting with hounds is most times about the hunt, pest control can be carried out if need be. In all these cases when the quarry is released the ending is that a fit, healthy animal be released or a old or sick animal be killed. Terrier work IMO apart from live trapping (and trapping is pest control, not hunting) is the only method of fox control were I can get up close and personal with the fox, determine it's health and decide whether this is the fox I'm going to decide to kill or release. 2 Quote Link to post

I am all for release but how can you determine the health and fitness of a fox that has just been dug with a terrier if as you say it was not handled. 1 Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
I put a thermometer in it's mouth, ask it to hold it under it's tongue for a few seconds. Then take it's temperature. 4 Quote Link to post
