fat man 4,741
Terry Duggan was considered by many to be as good a terrierman as any. He dug fox, otter, badger, coypu and ,I think, scottish wildcat with his terriers and the blood of his white terriers is still in many a mans yard through their fells or jack russells. He dug up to the age of , six weeks before his death. Here's what he said in "Earth Dog - Running Dog" issue 219. "Incidentally, and this isn't to brag, but if any of you lads fancy you need what the Americans call a draw dog, and you cannot finish off what your dog has done for you by getting your hands on whatever, go home and watch telly, you shouldn't be in terriers." Neil its not a big deal for anyone to take out the game at the end of a dig,i once had a dog that would bite you quicker than the quarry if you tried to lift him when he was up close.I dont think there is too many that wont get there hands dirty but some lads like to see there strng dogs or lurchers work in the end of a dig and if thats what they like then why knock it,everyone does different things while in the field. Is it not illigal to handle game at the end of a dig ?also if everyone told the truth we have all done it including yourself but some pricks take it another step and then it gets ugly but everyone should not be tarred with the same brush. Its been a long time since i witnessed a good wheaton working, and they were top shelf along with the staffs that they also kept, but if your seen goin in a field nowadays with a spade terrier and strong your straight away branded as a badger baiter where with a lurcher not many pass much remarks.Through the years i have seen some top dogs working of all types, strong dogs and lurchers,MURPHY for instance,WK dog BoB JKs wheaton bitch which i seen work umteen times which you had a pup from and my own SPUD was not a bad dog either, accounted for a lot of fox but sadly there all gone. Some lads dont like lurchers on a dig, some dont like strong dogs on a dig and some like both as said before everyone to there own. 5 Quote Link to post
STRANGER 948
As long as the quarry is treated with the respect it deserves at the end of the dig, be it by hand, by gun or by strong dog then it matters not. I think we all know the difference between digging and baiting, there is a line and only the rats in the sport cross it. All Pre ban obviously. 6 Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
It's not illegal to handle a fox at the end of a dig. It's there written in law for all to see. It is however illegal to use any type of dog whatsoever to work any sort of quarry in a controlled enviroment, and that means the end of a dig. I have no problems with lurchers being present on a dig, same as I've no problem with lurchers being present on a days beating covert for a few foxes. As for it not being a big deal to take game out with your hands at the end of a dig. JMHO but most lads are afraid to do it. And someone asked who has been bitten ? Between my hands and feet, several times. Edited November 14, 2013 by neil cooney 4 Quote Link to post

STRANGER 948
Sure most lurchers lads are breeding now couldnt catch a fox if it did bolt. Like Liam Delaney said most of these lads are afraid to handle there dog never mind the game. Lurchers are grand for bolters cover and lamping but that's it they have long legs for a reason and it's not for sticking there head in a hole. Topics about wheaten's though no? Quote Link to post

Mosby 355
I can handle coon, fox and coypu just fine. I've been told badger are easily managed. But there have been some otter in the roots that I was not keen on getting my hands near. Those boogers I wouldn't have minded a strong dog for. Sometimes you reach a point you can't dig further and the game is just up and out of reach. The little dogs aren't capable of what needs to be done every time in an instance like that. I've never worked a real strong dog. Just recognize times I would have had use of one. 1 Quote Link to post
