I think the last year federation trials ware held was back in 1984 ... here are some photos of Wheaten Terriers from before then....

I have to disagree with you there Niel as a lurcher is a very handy tool around a dig, even more so than the gun. Both you and i have seen foxs slip out unnoticed and be out of gun shot range in no time

I dug 4 foxes Sunday morning for 3 digs in a place where they're not a problem and gets heavily lamped. I ended all 3 digs the same way. No gun used (even though I had one) , no strong dog, no handli

its basically quite simple voon .preference.

Each to their own I suppose, but you see a lot of shit posted about wheatens, glens and Kerry blues. Lots of lads lookin through rose-tinted glasses, where their concerned.

There were plenty of bulls that qualified at the trials so they were mute and as good as the wheatens there on the day, having said that wheatens were bred for the trials not the pit so it's not surprising that imo there better at the job they were specifically produced to do.Don't take this as me saying the bulls arnt as game ,I'm not and at their job they reign supreme but I reckon a well bred working wheaten just has that bit of style about him when he's grafting. The fact they are silent no matter how much there getting back except for the banging and no effort is wasted screaming and roaring just impresses the hell out of me

Liamselaney was talking about bulls and I've seen some good drawing bulls that weren't mute

I reckon Liam was commenting on both in as if they make a sound while working there game they were disqualified, let it be bull or wheaton, they were meant to work silent, all pre ban of course :victory:

I was talking about both, both breed of dogs(well bred)are good honest dogs at what they do best.To the man who said he saw wheatons doing it day in day out, if they were doing it right they would not be doing it day in day out.To the man who loves to hear them scream DONT LOVE IT,its one of the worst faults possible in a dog,he is screaming because he is afraid of what he is looking at,if he was any good his mouth would be full and he would not be able to scream(put him down)if you breed from shit you will get more shit and do a great disservice to the breed, and to the men who strive to keep them game.Dont be two hung up about staffs or Wheatons as draw dogs(which I dont agree with anyway)most cur dogs can draw,it proves very little if anything about a dog.

well said liam, from what ive seen any dog sounding that was not a terrier or hound was always a curse out hunting. without going into detail the bulls ive sen work were mute. must admit havnt seen a pure wheaten work only the lurcher crosses and they were also quiet

There's a big difference between the both, wheatens where bred to work mute for 6mins in very little space! Bulls where bred to better another dog in as much time as it took! Be it mins or hours and had plenty of room to do so, and its well known that bulls have bettered wheatens at there own job, but you never heard of the wheatens filling a bulls shoes! Or using wheaten blood to improve the bulls..
