Gaz_1989 9,539
A mate sent me a pic of his friends first cross the other day and it just confirmed that genetics don't always go as planned. It was ugly as sin and way out of proportion. Back was too short for its body, legs too long, neck didn't look right, poor feet. I don't know how well it performs in the field. It may be outstanding. But I like a running dog to look like it can do a job as well as actually being capable. I know looks aren't everything but I don't fancy spending 10-15 years (potentially) feeding and looking after something that's thrown back to shrek. Quote Link to post
nothernlite 18,089
Some of the best dogs ive seen were strange looking feckers so its all about looks lucky your mother never thought that way lol 2 Quote Link to post

But honestly if you offered me the best running dog in England and it looked like a dis-proportioned cat then I would tell you to keep it. I know some lads don't care about looks but when you can get a good looking grafter why own an ugly one? Quote Link to post
bullx100% 681
i like a good looking dog.there was a time when i first started when the number of rabbits i caught ment more to me than anything and at that time i would own any kind of dog as long as it was catching big number.i coundnt care if the dog ran backwards and looked like a yetty as long as it caught..........but now numbers dont mean that much to me and although i eat allot of what i catch now i don't need the dog to put food on the table so i don't have to put up with a ugly mutt that can catch everything in site lol i can own a smart looking dog what catches enough to keep me happy.like been said theres nowt worse than feeding and owning a dog for 10-14 years what you just carnt bond with. 2 Quote Link to post

At the end of the day looks shouldn't even come in to it certainly no where near working ability And its great that you feel like that. But to tell someone else "LOOKS SHOULDNT COME INTO IT" is kind of forcing your opinion onto them. If looks dont come into it for you then thats fine, great even. But they come into it for me. I like a nice looking dog, muscular legs and shoulders, good depth of chest, long tail, good feet, well proportioned head and neck. I also dont really like white dogs or black dogs with alot of white. So I wouldnt own one. There is enough choice out there to have a dog that you like the look of. If someone doesnt mind owning an ugly dog, then that is fine. I wouldnt dream of telling them they should only own good looking dogs. 2 Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Best worker you'd seen but pot ugly, or best looking average worker you ever did see, what would you guys in to lookers pick to breed from or own? To own would be the best looking average worker. Breeding would be opening a whole new can of worms I think. I started off talking about disproportioned dogs. Could a seriously disproportioned dog really be the best worker youve ever seen? Length of back, tail, shape of feet, size of chest and neck all contribute to making a good worker. Dont they? Could a dog with a narrow chest, funny feet, oversized head, short back and short tail really be an outstanding running dog worthy of breeding? Either way, good debate lads 2 Quote Link to post
