Guest Ditch_Shitter
What made ye suspect Hornet, Mike? See; We have no way of guaging it's size here. But, believe me, I've seen a Hornet and it's not something ye'd ever forget either. I saw one as a kiddie and it appears flatter bodied and more, well ..... Flat and angular than any wasp. F*cking huge too. They actually look pretty much as ye'd imagine they should. Scarey. Having said that; They're actually a lot more docile than most wasps and many Pesters treat them much like bees. Convince the client to leave them to peacefully get on with their thing and then go away. There's more wasps and wasp like things out there than ye could shake a stick at, mate. I haven't got a Field Guide so can't really be of any further help. Except I don't believe it's what they call a " Digger " wasp. I had one of those identified and they're quite differant. So it's likely Not a Hornet or a Digger Wasp, at least.

bill88 6
Theres a hornets nest at one of the golf courses i shoot on.Its in an old chestnut tree, you can see them flying in from 50 yards away, and theres a distinct whir/hum from there wings, not like the buzz of a wasp.I've spoken to a couple of the members, and they say the hornets are very docile. On the subject of identification, hornets are quite dirty looking, more a browny orange than yellow. ferret15 0
could it be a paper wasp i know the ones in this pic are brown but it states they can be black and I'm sure i saw something similar in Australia and was told it was a paper wasp ? http://www.everythingabout.net/articles/bi...sps/paper_wasp/
Guest Ditch_Shitter
looks like this fella.......... Philanthus lepidus Looks good to me, Donks. But what about the antennae? Orange on Mikes one. Dark in that shot. Or could gender or an of the time enviromental influence be the cause there? I'm thinking perhaps pollen or something? Actually, " Bald Faced Hornet " looks almost as good for it. Not how I remember the one I saw. But mine was resting and not drying out on a pin. But I now have to question wether what I saw even Was a Hornet. It looked for all the world like a huge, mutant Hoverfly. What's your experiance, mate?
