Goldfinch Mule

Recommended Posts

I bought what I was told a cock goldie mule from the show at staford on Sunday, nice big Norwich cross, he still hasn't sung but the canary in another cage has! Do ŷou think I've been ripped or do some take longer to settle , is there any way of telling by looks?

I let a fella have a goldie mule that took 2 nearly 3 weeks for it to sing at it's new home and it only started when the fella hung it up outside as it was aviary bred and had never been indoors before he had it,A new home is a funny thing for any animal and you wouldn't expect a dog to be up and at it straight away so just givei t time to settle in and i'm sure it'll be fine,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,unless it's a hen

Yes mate there is no way to tell unless they sing or it lays a egg, shame they can't be told apart like goldies can by the red face but fingers crossed for you and try letting it hear some goldies singing on you tube or something as that might help. But give it time to settle in as it might have never been in a cage or a flight before and it is all new to it where he is now,if by some chance you have been had i'll give you a goldie mule cock but like i say give it a few weeks and i'm sure your new bird will be singing it's head off for you

There are certain ways you can tell cock or hen mule, an old boy of 87 who had birds most of his life told me the secret off sexing them and up till now as worked 100%, cheers Davy Boy

Well come on then out with it ? :D ..........I just go on the basis that cocks sing and hens dont......tell us the secret im sure the ol boy wont mind.

There are ways of telling like head shape and even so i'm told the nostril valley's on a birds bill but i'm not clever to see any difference but i surpose it could be like dogs and with time you can sometimes tell if it's a dog or a bitch your looking at.I did watch one fella at a bird show walk a row of differnt canaries and he was going cock, cock, hen, cock, hen, hen, etc and when the fella he was showing this to asked the birds owners he was 100% right,so could well come with expiriance but i recon Pete could tell us more on the different ways of sexing a bird....(not like that ffs :laugh: )

Ye'd need my boss, mate! He's unsettlingly good. Sorts through a birds feathers as naturally as you or I can count to ten!

Ye have to remember that, whilst I now have a C Permit, and so am allowed to catch and ring on my own; I'm only allowed to try for House Sparrows. And I'm allowed to ring anything else that, incidentally, goes in my sparrow traps.

Thus, I ring a good number of Great Tits (I can generally sort them). Blue and Coal tits aren't divisible by gender, outside the breeding season. Chaffinches are no problem, of course.

Believe it or not? F**king Hose Sparrows are the worst ones! It's very easy to say; " Oh. Cocks are coloured. Hens aren't. Young have a yellow gape. Easy! "

Yeah? You just wait till ye have an uncoloured bird in ye hand. And it's got a bit of yellow in the corners of its beak. Suddenly, adult female? Or young, possibly male? It makes ye wish ye boss Was there! :icon_eek:
