kranky 507
This is a cross that really intrests me and ultimately I'd like to have out of my 3/8 5/8 dog to a half x deer x grey bitch in a few years. I like the steady side to the deer grey to offset the always ready for action bull x nature but ultimately I want the jacket that comes with it without adding any other terrier to it. Be good to see some more pics please. Surely you also want the speed that a deerhound x grey has, as well? 1 Quote Link to post
lapin2008 1,587
I would agree with BullX, the Deerhound does seem to steady them a bit making them easier to live with on a day to day basis but they still have the Oomph when the lamp goes on!That's exactly what I'm looking with a good jacket i carnt understand why they not more popular,? it really sounds like a good x that could do most quarry. with the deerhound in there should give better wind+ feet, just strange you dont see more of this x . The coat would be a big thing for me with that type of dog.. I really like the idea of this type of breeding and if I wanted another dog its one that I would definitely think about. For me, personally I think I would have to put a lot of effort into choosing the right one for me out of the litter and go visit several times etc as a pup with a frame on the lighter side would probably suit me better for the land I run. I was kind of assuming you'd be getting that being a greater splash of sight hound but I'm not unhappy with what my bull x has got now.I'd happily have one of our friends pups to bring on and use in later years as the dogs used to make them I'm more than happy with using but I haven't got the space This whole thing with feet people have got is mad if the rest of the dog attached to them is shit what good are great feet? Coat and temperament at home although I'm not bothered to much by that but defo good coat is the top of the list. Quote Link to post
sandymere 8,263
I had a DH/grey X bull/grey and having only a 1/4 bull gave a racier type. He was around 27" to the shoulder and some beast. Imagine the stature and presence of a deerhound grey with extra bone and that little something that the bull gives. Alas he broke his wrist before he could prove himself so went to a pet home. Comparing the 3/8 bull, 1/8 DH I have now and him I would go with the 1/4, bull 1/4 DH if going for the type again, perhaps not the ideal rabbit dog but if the ban got lifted? Quote Link to post

For me, even if the ban is lifted the lions share of runs that most 'all-round' dogs will see is going to be rabbits (especially for me living in North Yorks) Many big 28" +, dogs do very well on rabbits, my own dh x included but I have also seen dh/bull/grey (admittedly more of a heavier type) really struggle them. I am not sure what the dog was like on other stuff, it could have been OK but most likely wouldnt be any better than any other average dog. It's not that the dog was particularly slow, just that maybe a combo between the weight, height, turning and strike just didnt work for that particular dog.. It is the one thing that would worry me about this breeding but if I could guarantee one like Sandy's I would be all over it 1 Quote Link to post

I don't think the good bull crosses need deerhound blood to improve wind or feet Ray. Just my opinion. Coat could be an advantage definitely. But there are SOME bull cross out there doing the job with bags of wind and excellent feet. The ones that should be bred from Quote Link to post

The catch rate between my 28 1/2" one is probably comparable to most good/average smaller dogs on rabbits, his turning is not that of a smaller dog... obviously but his strike is good which evens it out. He does get tired sooner than my smaller dog on the steep banks etc in the dales though Quote Link to post

DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
Genuine question as I don't have much experience of bull xs........ But why would anyone want to add bull blood to a deerhound x? Edited October 15, 2013 by DeerhoundLurcherMan 2 Quote Link to post
