Guest HAWKEYE
HI GUYS WENT FOR THE FIRST PROPER RUN OF THE SEASON SATURDAY AFTERNOON, THE HARES WERENT TOO WISE BUT SOMEHOW MY BIG SAL GREY DOG RAN LIKE HE HAD NEVER SEEN ONE BEFORE GOT THE CHANCE OF A RUN ON ONE THAT SQUATTED AND NEEDED A BOOST FOR THE PUPS CONFIDENCE SO I SLIPPED THEM BOTH ON IT AS IT ROSE... PUSS WOVE OVER THE STUBBLES, TWEEN THE BALES AND FINALLY UNDER THE 5 BAR GATE WITH 2 LURCHERS IN HOT PURSUIT ACROSS THE LANE AND INTO AN UNCUT FIELD , i RAN OVER TO SEE FEN AIMLESSLY HUNTING UP THE SCENT WHILE BROOK MY 23 INS BITCH WAS SPINNING THE HARE IN EVER DECREASING CIRCLES UNTIL STRIKING AND NAILING IT. SHE RETREVED IT LIVE TO HAND IN FINE STYLE . BUT IT WAS ONLY THEN I SAW THE DAMAGE THE STUBBLES HAD WROUGHT ON FENS STOPPERS, HE HAS DONE IT BEFORE BUT THIS IS THE WORST, BOTH WERE SKINNED USELESS AND DRIPPING BLOOD. WHEN I GOT HOME I CLEANED THEM UP WITH A BIT OF DETTOL IN WATER BEFORE SPARYING THEM WITH GENTIAN VIOLET? IS THIS A GOOD COURSE OF ACTION? AND WHAT DO YOU GUYS DO IN THESE INSTANCES? Guest Doug
I use salt water and try to keep off hard ground. Stubbles don't do so much damage once they've been rained on some. Still too hot to run dogs here.
Guest Jonner
The best course of action is to firstly not course summer hares ,or if you cant do that wait until the ground softens and run them on the green . I was told some time ago to use tcp instead of dettol as the later kills the good bacteria aswell as the bad.
salclalin 240
I was talking to a mate only last week about this last problem,he used to work at WALTHAMSTOW greyhound track. He used to use CORNUCRESINE. The stuff stables use for horses hooves,he reckons it is the dogs bollocks for injuries to the stopper pads.hope this helps.
DiStuRBeD 0
ive been told by a few blokes here in australia that metholayted spirits can toughen the pads up, is this true, has anyone tried it there? bit late i know, but perhaps for next time.
Stabs 3
Meths or surgical spirit does harden the feet. I've used it on myself before and it's worked well, but if you use too much then the skin cracks. First time I used it on myself I had a tiny hairline cut I didn't know about........ stung a bit I can tell you. I don't use it on the dogs.

lucky 578
my mate does a lot of coursing and he uses the stopper protectors (leather & wax) but he would put them on the dogs even when walking & jogging so the dog had time to get used to them ? i've seen his torn to bits after just a few runs with not a mark on the stoppers
