Ive loojed at other posts about mink on this forum and they dont seem to answer some of my questions. So yesterday we did our first pheasant shoot of the year. And as walking through a wood a beater said he spotted a mink run into a little dried up stream. This stream hasnt been running for a few years now. Do i look for a nearby pond in the woods or just set traps near to where to was spotted? Im using mk6 fenns and a kania 2000 baited with rabbit. The ponds in the wood are more like mud pools but this area is also a few hundred meters from a flowing river. Whats my best option?

Mink aren't such a problem at this time of year once your poults are roosting safely away from the mass congregations in the release pen. I understand your concern though and they will think nothing of taking your birds daily as food. If you can - saturate the area you saw the mink with tunnels or cages - if there is a significant rabbit bury nearby it will be worth concentrating around that area

If the river/waterway is within your boundary then trap that systematically too - always keep a trap or two going along the riverbank where it is easy to check as you go out to feed or whatever - it will pay dividends. If there is a natural avenue from the waterway to your mud pools - a dried up streamway or rough ditch then that is also a good place to trap.

For baited traps I recommend using kippers for bait - mink love them and the fishy smell will pull them in, and what's more, the flies don't go so mad for them as they do a rabbit carcase so you will need to refresh it less often

Good luck!

Are minks only found by water sources or near to them, or do they come inland. I had a recent attack on my geese, and had a runner duck killed while I was in the area found the duck after it had just happened and there was a whole in its chest cavity no other wounds aparant. In thinking a mink could be the culprit. There used to be lots of rabbits, I haven't seen any this year. What do you think? Any advice welcomed.

After reading through a few other discussion regarding the fenn mk6 being the only commercially available rabbit trap, in which to set in holes, and with many regarding it as being far less humane and simply not for the job as the jubys and imbras were, I thought a discussion on what would make a more effective, yet lightweight design, possibly taking features from all the traps mentioned above would make an appropriate and possibly, interesting topic.
anyone with suggestions on what they believe makes the fenn not so ideal for the job and how it could be improved (possibly the ideal design for a mk2 'rabbit') and what makes the imbras and jubys absolutely powerhouses of rabbit killing machinery, please feel for free to put your opinions forward and get the ball rolling

I have been doing a minimum amount of work around the pheasant shoot pens over the past few weeks allowing me to get used to the surroundings and know the pen alot better.
In the process of building shelters for the arrival of some new pheasant chicks I stumbled upon 2 holes in the ground (like mole tunnels). 1 is just in a little dip on the ground and one is going into the floor next to a rock. These both are a good mile away from eachother. I dont know weather they are Stoats, Rats or Weasels but they need dealing with. I was wondering weather to smoke the holes out but as i can only find one the pest may escape. One of the game keepers suggested putting Fenn Traps outside the entrance BUT i dont know weather the nests are active and as i only know where one entrance on both nests are i am stumpt. The chicks are due soon and i need to sort this out. ANY SUGGESTIONS TO MY SITUATION WILL BE TAKEN MOST GRATEFULLY. Thanks.

      Hi all ,

The local farmer called round for a chat the other night to tell me that a few ducks had started to nest and lay eggs on the stream behind my house so i thought to myself, "lets give these ducks a good chance" , as ducks are a rare sight around here.

So friday evening i went out with the rimmie to get myself some bait , a nice buck rabbit did the job. I then went and got my live catch and set in on a nice enclosed part of the stream where there was a track going through. So baited up and covered in rushes i went about and managed two magpies ( we have a lot of these around this year).

Got up at 9 this morning and went to check the trap and i was greeted by the spine-tingling cry of the mink. A big dog mink had taken the bait and was dispatched quickly using the .22 rimfire.

So all going well i will keep you all updated on the progress of the ducks. I have undertaken this as sort of a conservation project for the area so i hope the work pays off.
