brookie 1,193
After car spotties with motorbike batteries (tin can cowl an a ton of tape), we got a 'Clear Eye' then a 'Blue Eye'. The hunt was always on for decent army bags too, those batteries seen a lot of good bags an good coats off... they were a good lamp those blue eyes ..once we moved onto the motor bike battery we found the best battery carriers were a gallon plastic jack cut the top of put some BT rope in for a carrying strap and pack the sides with card or paper and use grey gas tape to hold it in .the acid still got all over the back of what ever you was wearing though 4 Quote Link to post
smithie 2,443
i have seen plant pots with the bottom cut out then grafted on the the front of spot lamps to keep the beam tight.. 3 Quote Link to post
rough dog 333
LR 9 or 14... motorbike battery in a strap made from a seat belt, with a silent switch and an inner tube around the lens to reduce the wings of the beam ! if you were somewhere you shouldn't be you didn't want to shine into someone's bedroom window from 3/4 mile away at 3 am ha ha . I remember having my first yuasa dry cell battery it was revolutionary ...no more burnt clothes or left leg. I still use the same LR 9 now after 30 odd years...I had it confiscated once but I got it back it`s still got the inner tube on it but I've been through loads of switches and leads, if that lamp could talk it would tell some stories its been used all over Wales.. lots of England and from Cumbria to Thurso but I haven't taken it to Ireland yet even though I go every year so maybe next year I`ll take it. I always say if its not broke why try and fix it ! 1 Quote Link to post
kranky 507
We used to use Yuasa alarm batteries that my mates dad got from work. Rigged up to the square spotlights from Halfords and then a Coleman. Quote Link to post

swg dave 334
Its strange really from that first night out on that golf course, right up to now, and I still enjoy lamping as much with a passion. Its a pity that decent vid cameras weren't about in those days either, like of the quality they are today, imagine getting some film of being out lamping in 1979, cor that would of made some good viewing, back then the fields were heaving, watership down come to mind. I know you can't beat getting out and doing it yourselves, and I know there are some good lamping DVD's out there, but I hope they bring a few more out, showing all manner of crosses with some real knowledge on correcting behavioral problems, the sort of common probs that we face bringing up pup to adult just something a little bit more in depth. And please don't think for one minute, that I'm putting any body down, because in the making of the lamping DVDs available which i have thoroughly enjoyed watching, must of taken many pain staking hours of hard work, and I would like to say thank you for producing them. But we want more lol.... Happy lamping........ Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Blue eye lamps where great, nice tight beam, remember once when my yuasa battery packed in,so walked back to the mk1 escort van and took the battery off,put it in a rucksack and carried on,them where the days!! Did it start when you put it back on? I started with the square plastic thing from the local car spares, and a 12 v motorbike battery, not great but it worked, then I got a job in a place that had one or two sealed alarm batteries knocking about no more holes in my coat or jeans, well not fro acid anyway, as one bloke said earlier I remember getting the lazerlight from Johnson fieldsports, that really did transform things for me, nowadays use the smaller lighter shooterlight. Big bald beautiful 1,231
Still using the laser light,on my third. Lost one, gave one away on here and still running one with the heavy shoulder strap carrying system Quote Link to post
swg dave 334
We drove all the way out to Hampshire one night lamping, l had one of those square orange metal cased batteries with car seat belt type straps . We lamped a rabbit for my friends dog which he run and caught, now it was my run, I was lamping plus slipping my old bitch bonny, we had literally been in the field no more than 5 mins, so I put the lamp on a rabbit just ready to slip the dog and a fecking great blue flash and flames from the battery where CIG lighter plugs into it, I went one way the battery and lamp went up in the air, and the dog was cowering on the floor as if I was going to beat her.. That was the quickest nights lamping ever. Long drive home long faces, still we can laugh about it now lol.. Quote Link to post
