hutchey 147
So I went out with the bairn again tonight and soon enough we spotted Charlie. High seats were out due to my anti friends homing themselves on them so we wandered into the wood area. Not great weather, no wind and a half moon behind us were against us but a few squeaks and we saw the eyes. No shot so we moved about 20 feet left. Dammit, Charlie vanished. A few more squeaks and it was responding. A bit of a squeak conversation later and it was coming nearer, not quite in the permission area yet but nearing. We moved out into the field, running the risk of our silhouettes being seen. Dropping onto our knees, I was ready, my son lit the area up, eyes were there, no clear shot at its boiler room. Could have taken the head shot but it was too much of a snatch decision. A split half second and Charlie had ducked under the cover of some long grass. 10 minutes later and with us on our knees fending off Mosquitos, Charlie had definitely gone. Might try the home made NV on the 243 next time out and see what that brings. A couple of minutes later as we were doing a final scan, the mist was coming down thick and fast at low level. Gun was all damp, and lens all misted up. So we timed that well I guess. Would have benn less than impressed if I'd opted oft the snapshot and wounded it and then having to wander round several acres in the mist to finish off a wounded Charlie. Quote Link to post
air gun ant 1,666
You can never take a shot back hutchey mate, but you will get another chance at him, well done for showing some restraint! Atb ant 1 Quote Link to post
seprim 32
Well done Hutchey - Keep at it mate What 85grain ammo did you find works in your howa? I found that Norma 75gr Hornady V-max are shooting sub 1 inch groups at 100 yards in mine so thats fine for fox (my deer round is either a cheap Federal 100gr softpoint- 1moa or an expensive Federal 85gr sierra hollowpoint which shoots .5moa) assuming I do my bit... hutchey 147
Hi Andrew, I was using 90gr PPU as they are cheap, gets my rifle barrel broken in. I've got some 58gr Hornady Varmint Ballistic tips and some 95gr of the same too. When i use these up i'll try some federal and some Remington maybe. Going up for my induction at Bisley in a couple of weeks so hope to get through some ammo up there at some point. Just finished doing a load of ballistic tables for the 3 rounds i've tried so far.
