Spring Gun

Recommended Posts

I'm with Skot on choices here. For £250 you are in budget for a very decent 2nd hand example of any of these Weihrauch guns; whatever your preferred calibre. HW80K or HW95 makes a blistering rat and ferral pigeon rifle in barns and confined spaces, as well as an open-field rifle for rabbits etc..

HW77 is the best spring rifle for all-round shooting. Pest control or target shooting. It is tough, beautiful to handle, will last you a lifetime and as accurate as a .177 PCP whichever calibre you like. A masterpiece of an air rifle. No question about it.

Weihrauch or Air Arms mate.

You need to also ask yourself if its going to be a long lasting and every week hobby or just a hobby you do once or twice a year.

If its just once or twice a year there are other brands that you could look at new and cheaper.

Ive not tried one but heard good things about the Webley Value Max rifle.

Around £149 new with scope.

£250 will see you with the German Anti Tank weapon that is the HW90 gas ram, which is a superb rifle in .22!

You could also be lucky and pick up a Theoben rammer at that price (I got a Sirocco Deluxe for under £200).

£250 will also see you with one of the new Hatsan gas rams, or a new Edgar Brothers Hatsan 60S gas ram conversion (which I also have).

£250 can also see you with a new (as in shiny new in box) HW99!

Lots of choice!

I think the SMK XS19 and the Valuemax are actually the same gun. If you look to that end of the market, also have look at the Hatsan 55S or 60S which are better known as the Webley Stingray mark 2 just half the price!

Edited to add, I have also recently acquired a well beaten up old HW77 for £140, so if you are prepared to look around, you will find bargains.

Buying a new Weihauch these days is hit and miss when it comes to quality.

You will almost certainly have to spend more money on it.

Don't know why.

Makes you wonder how well paid their employees are, since some of them are not doing a very good job.

Buy second hand, or get one direct from a tuner which has been fettled, or just buy a TX and be done with it.

Even a new TX may need attention, but at least it's easy to open up, and will probably need no more than a degrease and relube to get it performing acceptably.

The last Weihrauchs I disassembled were a 98, which was relatively easy (only tricky part was knocking out those four little blocks - easy when you've done it once and got the hang of it ) and a 77. The 77 was hard work to disassemble and reassemble, and I repeatedly cut my hands and fingers on the numerous sharp edges on almost every part of the gun.
