hi was wondering if anybody would manage to help im looking at getting a redtail and was hoping to find out how big of a mews would be best for the bird . if anybody can help thanks in advance .mike

yeah this is my first bird .yes i have a mentor which is real handy im just doing some research at the moment to get to know as much as i can about the bird .im getting the bird from my mentor when i have everything ready. ive been with the bird as much as possible doing sum bonding with it and getting it used to me and the glove and feeding off the glove . i was just looking for different opinions on houseing the bird as everybody seems to have slightly deifferent opinions on housing them and i want it to have the most suited mews for the bird. mike

as big as you can manage to be honest mine is in a 8ftx12ft chamber and free lofted , I would say if you are chosing to keep your red tethered I would say you need enough space for your bird to bate but not let its wings come in contact with any of the walls within the enclosure but bigger the better so you can free loft your bird during the moult as I find it keeps a certain amount of fitness in the bird if it likes to hop about the branches I have in and uses the swing perch I have also hope this helps a bit ....

im being gifted the bird from my mentor as he is reducing his numbers . its at his at the moment until . have an enclosure built so i have just been going to his to bond with the bird . im going to collect timber this evening and built at weekend so fingers crossed ill have the bird home in a week or two . atb mike

12 x 12 be smallest for that sort of sized bird, better free lofted keep it fitter and less feather damage

I dont mean to sound negitive a really dont but...A good mentor should be going through the main upkeep of a b.o.p and housing being in the top 5 he should be telling you that you cant just knock 1 up over a weekend and telling you the size location on where gets the most day light etc he should be going to your garden and advising you.. the mews is the most importent key of your birds upkeep and saftey im just saying there is a hell of alot to learn about the design of a mews...

mine is 8ft by 12ft mews bird is on a 6ft by 6ft by 3ft high loop pirch .not a good idea to freeloft a red while training best bet is to make a mews big enough to freeloft in the future and build a good pirch to tie bird to while trained atb nig

I also kept my RT in an 8ft x 12ft mews. After a season or so, she was kept freelofted all year round.

But to begin with, as has been said, I would keep the hawk tethered at first.

Before building your mews, ask your mentor to look at the design and dimensions of it first.

Its easier to alter a design during the planning stage than after it has been built.

Also if the bird is to be tethered to a bow-perch, you will need to look at the flooring - something that is easy to keep clean, but will not blunt talons or damage feathers.

Is it a male or female RT you are getting?
