brazer 287
Time and patience Our dogs could teach us a thing or two iv seen some very smart animals in my day 1 Quote Link to post
beast 1,884
there are some interesting and thoughtful answers here. i would just add that i have never seen an idiot with a good dog unless he bought it in and then they usually don't stay good for long . and i have yet to see a clever person with rubbish in his kennel even if he bought in rubbish. by that i mean that a good dog man can make something out of a poor dog, but a twat is only able to spoil a good one. so i would say the single most important quality is cleverness, not genius not massive IQ not steven hawkins boffin, just a shrewd, smart nature to see whats what and how to get what you want from your dog 3 Quote Link to post
Slabcatcher 7
Definitely patience for me too and I've been around a few years to have learnt that from experience Slab Quote Link to post
CBdogsA1 420
You should be able to drink 2 bottles of buckfast before you do anything ! Be able to talk pure and utter pish ! Be able to recognise a 'worker' because of its scars ! Should be out of work ! Go to dog shows and leave litter and dog shit lying around ! Be able to train your dog to go for others ! Be up to date on the latest hunting tracksuit and trainers ! Make sure you can't 'splell' and be good at text talk ! Never buy a pup, then you know you've made it ! But the most important thing is, feed Dr Johns ! 1 Quote Link to post

RossM 8,119
Accept that what works for you may not work for others and as long as it works it's not the wrong way, know when to take in constructive advise and learn when to discard the bullshit, be the best you can, accept the dogs for what they can and can't do, always stay positive no matter what the outcome, be willing to share advise and experiences, remember you can't take them with you so what's the point in keeping it to yourself if it could benefit someone else, and most of all and this covers all of the above and more......don't be an arsehole. 3 Quote Link to post

Common sense will tell you to be patient, to observe, to learn from others, plus a whole lot of other things. 1 Quote Link to post
whippet 99 2,613
in all honesty enough said,............and at the top of my list would be repeating that word patients and the word ,passion........... if you have the passion too just love watching dogs working , then you will be always trying to do , whats best for your dogs....... no bull shite , nothing to prove,...............just honest dogs who you give the desire and best opportunity for there work.......... honesty is up there aswell,........ I suppose theres bull shite in everything but hunting does seem to have its fair share,............and the reason behind it , is usually to prove something....... persistence and good attitude..................I see problems with dogs like projects ,.........a task to try and get a good outcome..... I enjoy a task,..........some you conker and some just haven't got the potential..........and unless some one better can change them , you cant change such things as drive,..........if aint there you cant put it in em.......
