IMO the most important qualities are patience, humility, and the desire to learn. You can even learn from an idiot, even if it is just how NOT to do something!

honesty, as long as your honest about yourself and your mutts then everything else can be worked on...

For me it's patience.....never yet seen a dog ruined by giving it a bit of time, time to mature and develop the necessary physical and mental attributes to do the job, but I bet we've all seen dogs ru

consistancy.

I know a lad who is consistant with being impatient. And consistant with being heavy handed. And consistantly feed a bad diet.

His dogs are shite

:hmm::hmm::hmm:

lmfao.:laugh::laugh: . maybe i should have worded that better. :D . if you do the opposite to that lad (consistantly you should get the opposite result. . :D . most good dogmen have a set routine. this is very important.. and i dont mean routinely forget to walk them. and beat them regurely :victory:

Cleanspade - slightly off topic here but how important is routine do you think?

One area I lack is routine. My bitch and even my pup now are both in the routine of having no routine.

Some days we go out at 6am, some days 12pm,

Some days 7pm. Sometimes all 3. Sometimes none and lamping.

Feed times again all over the place. From morning to after lamping and everything in between.

I have not noticed a negative effect. Is there one?

A mate of mine has a set routine and if he skips a beat the dogs are howling and going mad. I don't have that issue.

Maybe I'm lucky and some dogs NEED routine?

Patience, keenness, dog sense (like a huntsman has fox sense), that ability to learn etc.

Though, you can have all of these attributes to be a good dog man BUT as my mate says, and its very true, if your a crap hunter, your dogs ain't gonna see shit..!!

it depends how you define routine gaz. your dogs sound like they have a routine to me . work sleep eat. do you feed before they work. or do you feed after they work. what are they fed..how much.

i never feed my dogs before work. i always give them the same food. always after working . i always feed the same amount to each dog. i give my dogs exersize around the same time every day if i change there habits it can have a negative effect . its an interesting point as .its a habit i have. i dont like to change there routine to much. all my dogs are relitively fit and well and long lived. to be fair they havnt got a massive workload. so its easy to keep them good..

I guess it's a funny one.

The pup isn't really included in this because at the moment she isn't really getting any exercise as such and gets 3 meals a day every day.

My bitch always sees me in a morning either for a brew in the house or a walk out. And she always gets a bone in the morning to last her the day.

She gets a meal about 12pm if we are lamping that night.

And she always gets fed before bed. That could be 7pm or 4am after lamping.

I guess there is some routine in there.
