Biggest Disappointment....????

Recommended Posts

Mine was having to shoot my daughters Bedi-whippet last winter when it turned Mutton duffer in front of the farmer who's land we were on. It was a litter mate to Northernlite's Wee Tess and had been raised with livestock from 8 weeks, never shown any bad tendencies and was well used to working day and night among sheep. I haven't a clue what snapped in her wee head but she was hard behind a fox on the mountain side and we were stood with the land owner watching, she went in to a bit of a dip after the boyo and didn't emerge so we took a quick hike up. When we got there she had one of your man's Ewes upside down by the throat. I got her chocked off and she went for me and wouldn't back down. The farmer was waving his gun about and hollerin to get out of the way, so I shot her myself because I would sooner have it that way. The wee girl was absolutely gutted but she has worked dogs with me from been able to walk out and knows the score.

She is now bringing on another pup from the same breeding because as she said "it was a one off and it happened in the heat of the chase" so I have no worries with the blood lines. Dam shame though because if the farmer hadn't been there I would have just leaded her up and brought her home. The scabby old mountain Ewe would have probably snuffed it in the snow anyway! I reckon the dog must have run in to the Ewe or something and the fox was nowhere to be seen, no holes and we didn't see it come out of the dip but the heather was fairly big and so were the rushes.

i had a bitch a couple of years ago which was the best i have evr owned, and one of the best i have ever seen as an allrounder. daytime hares, deer, fox, best ferreting dog i have evr seen, lamped, worked with the gun, the lot. beautiful temperament, easy going, happy dog. didnt even have to train her, she was almost telepathic!

got cancer not quite aged 3 years wasnt even in her prime. when the vets told me, i said "i'll bring her back tomorrow and put her down". they offered me various treatments, to keep her going a bit longer, i just quietly said no.

sat up all night talking to her, reminding her of all her great runs and catches (i can still see every run in my mind like they are on film). took her to vets to do the deed next day, and when it was over they asked what i would do with the body. i said i will bury her, so they offered to help me to the car. don't know why, but i said no i'll do it myself. picked her up wrapped in her old blanket from the car, walked straight past the motor and carried her in my arms two miles home like a baby and laid her out in her kennel. buried her next day under an apple tree where she used to lay in the shade on warm days

i'm not normally soft about dogs, but some of them do get inside you, and that bitch was very special to me, not just because she was a great worker but because she was a lovely lovely animal and a dear friend.

soppy old twat, thats almost put me in tears writing that!!!!!!
