Longnetting A Hedge

Recommended Posts

Went to look at another permission today, was still very overgrown but caught two rabbits in the short time we were there. Its not a place for purse nets. I have a 100 yard long net in the post (hopefully) plus a farmer is maybe going to give me one (Not sure how long). The hedgerows are full of thorns and most of them have a fence either side... maybe six-seven foot apart.

Would I want to have a big long net either side and a few 8 foot long nets through the hedge where i can? The rabbit that got away today just ran down the hedge so i need something in there. Would mean buying some gate nets though.

Could i just use my 100 yard alone? Have it along the field then put a pole in beside the fence - then another pole the other side of the fence and just have a loose bit of net hanging over the fence? Then pass it through a gap in the hedge and do the same on the other side?

Birds eye view. Red being the nets, black the fences. Hope you can understand my picture  Something like that?

Hard to say but in thick hedges rabbits will often run the inside of the hedge. So stop nets though it if you can,but if it's fenced in I would try some nets set on the runs.

To be honest thick dense hedges that are pig wired each side are as hard as it gets. Hard to net, hard to get caught rabbits in and out and enjoy the scratches and thorns. It's satisfying if you can do well though.

Good luck.

Purse nets on the runs? Bought 2x 18 foot gate nets last night so will try find spots for them in the hedge. Should have all I need. Could also put a wooden board in to divert the rabbits out into the long nets in the field. Seen a video of Simon whitehead doing something like that.

You can use long nets other side of the hedge, you want the rabbits to bolt, then run out to the nets, you could use boards, but I just use my wax jacket, and ferret box to block the hedge runners and try and force them out, you will still get hole hoppers, good luck.

If your struggling just run a long net up each side and you will pick any that bolt out the way and you can always catch any that bolt up the hedge in a easier to work burrow , or purse net in front of you and back net them , If its as bad as your saying your going to make too much noise getting into net it anyway so there no going to bolt
