Morning Out With Shotgun

Recommended Posts

This morning I had my first experience with shotguns in the field and I’m hooked already, totally different to what I’m use to and had so much fun, I joined a friend on some of his land removing some squirrels.

He started off and was picking one after another from the tree’s, I really enjoyed watching him at work, he then passed the gun over, I walked for about 2mins and spotted a squirrel at the top of a tree, I took the shot and was so happy to watch it fall straight from the tree, my first kill with a shotgun.

My SGC can’t come quick enough now, so much easier than using the rifle and having to spot through the scopes. :icon_eek:

Plus you don't have the worry of a background, only the max travel which is limited.

So we never have to worry about background with a shotgun then so shooting into say a hedge or over an unsighted brow is fine you really type some pish on here at times

No if you read it properly I said only max travel.

You need a solid background with a rifle because bullet travel is potentially in the thousands of yards. With a shotgun its around 80 yards so you don't need a background if the distance to the boundary is far in excess of the shot travel.

I still disagree with a shotgun it is still important to worry about your back stop and thats speaking as some one who has been shot more than once by wayward guns on driven days

gotta agree with dan .........rifle or shotgun ........both require extreme care and caution ...........start thinking you dont need to think back stop or distance with shotgun.........sooner or later you will wish you had

I didn't say you don't need to worry about how far its ultimately going to travel, rather that you don't need a solid backstop against the prey in most cases.

Most shotgun shots taken are against flying birds where the only backstop is the sky. Yes, you have to ensure the shot doesn't leave your boundary so that means having regard to the distance to the boundary and the direction in which you're shooting. But that doesn't mean you need a solid backstop like a rifle because unlike a rifle the range is limited and provided you allow for that fallout zone, there should be no issues.

I would suggest that if someone has shot you on a driven day, then they shouldn't have been taking that shot. I too have been on driven days where I've seen someone take low birds in the direction of the beaters, that is stupidity rather than the fault of not having a backstop which is near impossible with a bird in flight. At the end of the day, you have to have regard to direction and safe distance, but you don't need a solid bullet stop like a rifle.

I've said it many times on here before, I will let a bird go rather than shoot in an unsafe direction.

Alsone stop digging that hole you said and I quote "Plus you don't have the worry of a background" patently you do, if you choose to read my posts I have not said a solid backtop is a necessity only that due consideration should be given to your backstop as apposed to "not worrying of a background"

Dan I haven't dug a hole. You don't need background or backstop, however, you choose to phrase it, just an awareness of the maximum travel distance which is what I've said throughout.

The word Background implies something behind the target to stop the pellets. As I've said all along, that isn't necessary.

The OP can quite safely shoot up trees even if some of the pellets will pass through the canopy provided the maximum travel is such that they are likely to fall back onto the land where he has permission.

.

I believe in you misinterpreted my statement that you don't need a background as meaning you can shoot in any direction, to quote you "so shooting into say a hedge... is ok" when I made it quite clear from post 1 that you need to have regard to the maximum safe travel. As I see it misunderstanding / different interpretations of wording aside, we are basically on the same page with safety.
