Dan Davies 7
Seem to be reading a lot of people saying there saluki xs aren't all that on retrieving? I have a sal/col/grey/bull x grey/sal! A right mix up ino but just wondered what people though was the best way to tackle him, his re call is ok! Isn't great when there's another interests. But I'm concerned on the retrieve side of things Quote Link to post
moonlighter 1,163
Most salukis aren't natural retrievers. Yours is more of a lurcher than an out and out coursing dog so yours might be a natural. My old dog would retrieve a ball and dummy but when he killed a hare he would just stand over it. And on the coursing meets I used to go on, most didn't retrieve. Your best bet is to train him to retrieve and see what happens. Good luck Quote Link to post
Dan Davies 7
Wouldn't of said he's a natural at retrieving! He get it and then lay there with it Quote Link to post
bedwhippet 164
Depends on the dog itself and if you spend enough time training to retrieve,, I got coursing bred bitch and she retrieves,, I was just lucky that she wanted to do it so from the first throw of a ball she brought back to hand,, when she does catch she brings back live to hand which is pretty good hasn't been from very long distance but still a retrieve is a retrieve,, just stick with it make it fun and reward thoroughly, it should get there Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Saluki cross? Retrieve? Only kidding fella. It can be done. Drop J Dog a pm. He seems to have mastered the saluki types. Better man than me My 12 week old deerhound cross pup is a natural retriever. Whatever she finds she runs to me with it in her mouth. She found a birds feather in the garden this morning and come running to me with it. Sat at my feet and dropped it. My saluki/whippet/grey bitch is reluctant to retrieve and always stops short. arcticgun 4,548
nevr had a retrieve problem wityh me pure he either miss em or eat em, serious though pal put in plenty of time forming a good bond and despite any provocation (of which there will be loads) don't hit the dog, keep training short and simple , plenty of rewards, but know where to draw the line behaviour wise , mine can and will retrieve now, well when the mood suits him, they mature at different rates saluki very slow to mature , same with some crosses as well, good luck pal. sometimes they make kills and work so hard the least you can do is go collect it from em Quote Link to post
Dan Davies 7
Thanks for the advice chaps! I don't mind if he makes a kill and holds it for me to go over, however with rabbits this could be a bit tedious ! And lets be honest we all want a dog that retrieves! He's still young so i shouldn't beat myself up to much! Just got to persistent with then and hope for the best! Quote Link to post
