danw 1,748
The cost of raising a litter well should be reflected in the asking price If the pups are shit then people shouldn't / wont buy them I have worked out what a litter of 6 pups has cost to get to 8 weeks old 8lb of meat a week for 4 weeks £24 panacur £16 Tail docking £120 1st jabs £90 other feed £25 so £275 or £45 a pup without the double rations for the bitch and the electric bill for the kennel heating It's not a lot of money so where does the "working mans price" of £150 to £250 come from It's a sad thruth that most pups are bred for a cash return and not for the next generation of stock or to improve a line The vet here said tail docking would be £100 per pup wtf is that all about? £85 for the certificate and £15 for the actual procedure, joke!! Bloody hell mate it's 7 pound a pup including cert down here

Bloody hell mate it's 7 pound a pup including cert down here £15 per pup plus a 140 mile round trip to the only sensible vet for miles, that was after two conversations with the different vets.one vet who told me that tail was docking was totally illegal and another vetinary nurse who said it would be very dangerous to put three day old pups under general anasthetic, why would they need an anasthetic I said, well it will hurt otherwise she said and that would be cruel !!!! You couldn't make it up as a comedy, and then all you get is a photocopy of your ID in a file at the vets for anyone to see and a some photocopies of a docking cert downloaded from the internet There are times when Vets are the best thing since sliced bread and then there are all the other times :-(

Wxm 1,638
I still don't get why anyone would sell working pups for profit. http://m.preloved.co.uk/m/showadvert/109212434/pug-puppy.html I reckon if I bought 5 bitches and a dog and bred the bitches once a year I wouldn't even need to work. pugs / frenchie's / british bulldogs / 5 bitches @ roughly 6 pups each = 30 pups @ 800 - 1200 each = 24,000k - 36,000k for 6 - 30 weeks work a year (deppending on if they come in at the same time or not) some breeds they breed back to back so 24,000k - 36,000k turns into 48,000k - 72,000k like it or not you can see why people do do it, also if there wasnt a market then there wouldnt be a need for them to breed.
RossM 8,147
It always amazes me that folk will pay £200 + for boots/wellies/waterproofs but will baulk and piss and moan at the thought of paying similar for a dog... So, what price a pair of wellies for a working man..... I know of 2 or 3 litters in the past 12 months that were initially priced way over what they were worth...one or two sold...the rest were reduced in price and the remainder stuck around for weeks before being given away...in one instance, where there had been 13 in the litter, to a rescue home.... Totally disgraceful.....and borne out of greed.... Is it the litter I'm thinking off?

And the sire and dam had - at the time the pups were born - never done a days graft....and to make things worse were brother and sister.....

Often 2 or 3 so double amount of bitches in those breeds... Same way with dachshunds we used to breed em high mortalitys rates in first couple weeks from birth... C-sections commonplace... All those breeds you mentioned have high incidences of cleft palates and c sections... Thats why puppy farmers crossbreed pugs with beagles and cavalirers
