04fox8 168
The point I was trying to make was how can a pup from someone along the street be worth nigh on the same as a 'fancy' one? It makes little difference to me if it is a £50 pup, or a £500 one.....but there will be reasoning behind these costs. I was goping to start a post 'Why Bother with Pedigree?'.....But that is a whole different 'discussion'...

I think you'll find in a lot of cases the reasoning behind the cost is a name, simple as that. Edited October 4, 2013 by mackay
BORDERSCOT 3,816
It's just the way it is....you have lurcher men commenting on the price of gun dogs which are always going to be more expensive Why... Prestige. The market dictates that people will pay more for gun dogs, across the board. Spot on. People pay more for gun dogs than they do lurchers simple as Not always.. If I ever needed a spaniel I reckon I could get one from working stock and pay no more than I'd pay for a lurcher... Aye but in terms of the over all market gun dogs attract a higher price than a lurcher. Maybe mate, but I don't know any genuine countryside shooting person round here who would pay or even expect to pay more than £150 odd for a springer spaniel.. Maybe the weekend shooter middle class types would, don't know many of those though! I've often wondered why gundogs attract higher prices than lurchers.... If you weigh it up...quite a few of us will use our dogs daily throughout the season...I know I do...gundogs on the other hand will be used by the majority once a week in the shooting season....maybe I'm wrong on that though.... :hmm:But I will concede at this point that I know feck all of shooting or gundogs.... I paid £450 for a working collie away back in 1984...lot of money then...I needed a dog quickly following an accident with one of my own and that was the price I paid.... The last pup I bought - a collie x - came from Wales and was £120.....

Hot Meat 3,109
If your making a profit out of a litter of pups your a cnut...... If you can't afford to breed a litter, then don't... guys with there dogs best interest at heart won't make a profit, they be too busy finding GOOD homes.. How can you guarrentee good homes 100% ? Especially if your selling for 50 quid every wannabe going will be after them to pass on after a month or two. Cull your litter to a manageable size an place pups within your circle of mates. If your dog's are good enough to breed then that shouldn't be a problem should it? If you can't place pups in homes of folk you trust then cull them, I'd be up most nights if I'd passed dogs onto folk I didn't know, wether they paid top whack or not. Not worth the stress cull a d sleep like a baby lol
CBdogsA1 420
It's just the way it is....you have lurcher men commenting on the price of gun dogs which are always going to be more expensive First dog I ever bought was a field bred springer from working stock back in 95 or 96.. £35.. I'm fairly sure when I was looking around last year, that you could get a springer pup from Buccleuch (David Lisset's work) for £650.Just checked again but they are all reserved up for the next year, and no prices available. It winds me up if you can get a 'Decent' dog from these guys, what makes Joe Bloggs down the road think he can get £400-£500+? Average around our way for a springer at the moment is £350. Prices do change....Our current Woodburner stove needs replacing........ £795 in 1983.....Price quoted yesterday for todays model......£2500!! Someone I know bought one of his springers this year for £750 and had been on his waiting list for three years. Why wouldn't a man with decent springers working well and trained well be entitled to four hundred pounds for a pup?. Unless the pups come out fully trained and working well I can't see the relevance? The type of gun people I used to know who bred their own dogs where the type who actually went out hunting with dog and gun, and didn't spend their time standing around field trails, bragging about how many time the word FTCH appeared on the pedigree of their overpriced dogs.. This can be true but if you are counting Davy Lissett in there you obviously have never met him. I pick up with him regular and am not long in from a walked up grouse day with him. A nicer bloke you could not meet and has time for every one. Yes his pups are expensive but they are bred from some of the best and tested for every immortal thing possible, and he doesn't make the prices.

Not worth the stress cull a d sleep like a baby lol What a load of tosh. I bred my bitch ( 8 years old, 1st litter), I had 4 guaranteed homes plus mine before the mating. She had nine, I have one left and 3 very happy owners who if left to your way would not have had the chance of a pretty well bred pup. Now prices of pups is a breeders prerogative. I asked 200 for mine so that makes 800 so far. They have cost me 490 for C section, around 800 in raw meat etc, 120 for jags and say 30 for worming and 50 on the heat lamp. I also had a litter of terriers that was a mistake mating, they went to pet homes for the price of jags and worming. One of them I had to keep till it was 12 weeks for the lady, who I found out was ill. I gave her the money back for the pup and asked her to give it to her cancer charity. Think on before you slag of people with pups people. Sorry, been a long day.
Cleanspade 3,322
i was always taught that as far as stock goes you should always buy the very best you cant afford. this is very good advice if you are clued up on what you need. As far as stock goes once you have the very best in your yard you wont need to buy in again. now i dont care to spend a lot on anything, but if the right stuff is there then you pay for it. or you could always go for lesser quality. you often hear of top race horses. greyhounds. going cheap dont you. if you want the very best stock and want it at a working mans price. you will need to know somebody that knows somebody.

Not for 1 minute suggesting he's anything other than a nice bloke...and his DVD's are VERY Informative. I Don't have a problem with their prices either...NOT ATALL. It's Joe Blogs down the road that winds me up needing nearly the same for his pups....which may or may not have been meant to happen. Glad to hear he is genuinely a nice guy. Never met him, but he comes across as a decent sort when you see any video of him.
