Saluki X

Recommended Posts

I'm off to have a look at a litter of saluki/Whippet X Deerhound/bull/grey pups tonight. I have been warned though that a saluki X needs ALOT of attention. Now I spend "at least" 3 hours with my dogs a day (if not alot more) that are in the kennel 2 hours walking and in and around the kenells. Has anyone else found this with the saluki cross that they need alot of attention or they become very lonely?

Thanks

You'd be dead unlucky to have any of the typical Saluki 'problems' with a pup with such a small amount of Saluki in it.

I've found that the more you have a Saluki type with you, like in and around the house, the better they are. Like Samet Sam says: as long as you get them out in the field and trusting you and looking at you as a mate and leader you don't get anywhere near the problems you would if you just walk them on the lead then let them off once in a very long while. These dogs really do need to run and run: stop them doing that and they'll take every opportunity to bugger off and do what they need to. Get them out young bushing rabbits and they'll listen to you as you are the one taking them to fun places. Not saying it'll always be easy, but when you get one that hunts AND comes back to you they are awesome dogs.

Never had any probs myself.

They do better with other dogs as company.

They can run-off and 'hunt' for a while but they always come back. That said they are pretty predictable, I always know mine will run off to certain rabbit warrens.

N.B Skycat is dead right these dogs NEED to run. I have a 50:50 grey saluki cross and she comes back.
