Stigodadump 64
Hi Stuey and welcome. It's an annoying trait that effects some breeds more than others and it is the cause of more spoilt dog/owner relationships than anything else I know of. I find that it's a case of going back to basics and working with the dog as if it were a pup again, I work in a walled garden so there is a limited area for the dog to go and really praise it when it comes back. It is not a battle of wills so no matter how cross you feel don't show it, if you feel like sticking your boot up it's arse walk away! Don't raise your voice the dog is being awkward it aint deaf, raised voices can put the dog on edge and make it less likely to come back. Personally I'm not a lover of the treat method of training but plenty of people swear by it so you could try it if all else fails. I find if a dog is standing off a bit and just won't come back to hand if you make your self more interesting it will come up to investigate, you can crouch down and face away or kneel down and hide your face whilst calling it in, basically anything out of the ordinary to grab it's attention. If it won't come after a couple of commands don't keep calling just walk away in the opposite direction and try again in a minuet or two. Work at the relationship it takes a lot of time with a dog to form a decent bond and it wont happen if the dog is knelled up and you aren't spending time with it. All training is temporary the way I see it and it has to be reinforced throughout the dogs life to keep it sharp, make it interesting and don't keep repeating something that isn't working, do a command that he can perform and praise him then go back to the one he is failing on and try again. At school I was always getting bollocked for something or other and never praised consequently I hated school and all it stood for. Good luck mate and keep us posted.
