inan 841
To me, digging them out is about on par with kicking them when they run past you! One of my dogs is in "The Hare And The Swift Hound," he was on 3 out of 3 on the fens , ran his 4th to a dyke, was right up its arse when it went in a foxhole. Two guys that are in the " A Passion For Coursing Book" witnessed it .Only time he ever did 3 out of 3 , a week later he dislocated his left leg he never ran a long ears again. Quote Link to post

But after watching few dvds and clips on you tube always wonder would a doe have her leverts down a hole if she has got away from dog few times by hitting hole or pipe???? Quote Link to post
stubblebasher 150
It's one of the main ways of escape on the fen . They never used to pipe up , only rarely ,but that was when we ran them with non saluki bred dogs which could be outran easier. 2 Quote Link to post

Stigodadump 64
I have a hare that usually has it's leverets in the field where I store my round bales, I have seen it and the young pop into the gaps at the bottom of the bales like rabbits when the buzzards are overhead. This happens for a week or two and then the family spreads out and can be seen individually around the other fields, I wonder if this behaviour will be passed on to further generations? she has been in the same field for three years doing this. Incidentally I won't hunt hares because they are in decline round here due to changing farming practices. I think a lot of the deaths occur when the silage mowers are busy and the young are on the ground. We "rope walk" the fields to put game out before mowing, it doesn't take long and it's satisfying when you flush wee chicks etc so they are safe away from the tractors. Anyone digging a hare is sadly lacking in the moral department! 13 Quote Link to post
buster gonads 862
I,v put two to ground and i,v also seen two swim for it, one across a moat and the other across the river Went, the dog followed them but didnt stop to shake the water off which slowed the dog down alot, leaveing the Hare time to make her escape, it still puts a smile on my face , atb, buster. border lad 1,047
I have seen numerous ones go to ground, ((( let them be thier there another day but one sticks in my mind, Boxing day, early 70s A tremendous course, excitement, the Hare was in the air twice over, eventually the Hare took to an old tree stump, the stump was rotten up the middle, the Hare went right up, out of the dogs way, when I got down to the tree stump, you could here the Hares heart beating like a drum, myself and two other Lads witnessed that course, next run my dog was hunting a turnip field, I could not see the run, the dog came back over a 6ft, stone wall with a good 7lb Hare in his mouth, Aye they were the days, Freedom, and No problem from any one, 3 Quote Link to post
inan 841
now for all you crabers that presumed (as not 1 of you asked)that i killed the hare i did not instead i got it out put him into a wooden box that i had in the car and took it back to massive land that is 3 miles from my house this was the 4th hare i released there that year had 1 out of a tree trunk and dog caught 2 that were alive and un harmed so not so cruel as you lot think the place im trying to introduce them to used to have hares on 30 years back but farmer that used to have it shot them all my mate has the farm now and said would be nice to see a few about now say your sorry lol That was lucky, you having that wooden box in your car. Why didn't we think to ask you if thats what you did with the hare? After all its common practice we all have custom made hare boxes in our motors for just such occurences don't we? I 'm just a bit puzzled as to why you didn't mention it in the original post? The one that went in the foxhole in my post was not so lucky,I dug to it ,chopped of one of its legs with my spade and threw it down for the dog to grab. So 4 out of 4 .It would have been re-located but I 'd forgotten my," hare- box" that day. By the way, did you similarly re-locate those hares you filmed your dogs coursing and catching in the snow? If so hats off to you ! You are a proper conservationist!!! PS you didn't mention where the land was that you have restocked, if you'd rather not put it here I understand. You can send me a pm with directions to it later. Edited October 3, 2013 by inan 2 Quote Link to post
