Snoz 29
Has anybody had any experience in entering Griffons to Fox only, are they as bad as everyone says? Quote Link to post
R.A.W 1,987
A guy I know picked one up the start of this season but I haven't seen it work yet . Apparently it struggled in tight bramble but i'll make my own mind up when I see it work .............................. it's The grand variety . Quote Link to post

jeemes 4,453
that doesnt sound great , Ive been told the've got loads of drive and are especially good in cover although Im talking the petite the grand seem a bit cumbersome The petite will go through a brick wall. The drive is turbo boosted, but they will switch and hunt whatever comes.Keeping them to Fox never mind the same Fox might be a tad difficult. Beagles are better. Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
I had a Fauve de Bretagne for a while, similar type of dog, and they do switch from scent to scent as they work. Bloody infuriating to say the least. Great noses but no focus, if that makes sense. Apparently the French don't mind them switching scents as long as they are hunting something 1 Quote Link to post

sionnach 44
hi all we had a couple and a half of the small hairy griffon bassetts about ten or so year ago. we brought them out with our foot pack of beagle cross they where great dogs to draw cover but preferred to hunt rabbit, hare or deer then switch to fox we had them 2 seasons before we parted with them. the rest wopuld be on a fox but the griffons would be rabbiting or on a hare. they have a great temperment and easy to handle etc. but wouldn't gel to fox for us. hope this helps. 1 Quote Link to post
Snoz 29
Cheers boys I think I'll do a body swerve on the griffons, there's nothing worse than hounds rioting and I don't want to invite trouble. Cheers for the input you've saved me a fair bit of time trying to catch up with rabbiting griffons I reckon!!!!!! Lol Quote Link to post

Blaise 2,322
According to french criteria, at least 9 different kinds of dogs are named Griffon. Each type is used for a different quarry. 4 types of griffon vendéen- Petit basset vendéen, specialized for rabbits,- grand basset vendéen, polyvalent- griffon briquet vendéen for deer our boar,- grand griffon vendéen used for big game, 2 types of griffon fauve de bretagne :- basset fauve de bretagne, specialized on rabbit,- grand fauve de bretagne, very good for foxes, 1 among the 6 races of bleu de gascogne is named griffon bleu de gascogne, very famous on hare, 1 griffon nivernais, a great specialist for boar (i love them). 1 griffon korthal who is a pointer for birds. Except the griffon korthal, all these dogs need a strong education. The big ones may be easier to specialized on a scent. A pack of bassets fauve de gretagne for rabbit - Equipage rallye des falaises 4 Quote Link to post
Snoz 29
What I was after was a smaller type hound that would hunt one quarry Blaize , if the larger ones are the best bet for that I'll just stick to the hounds I've already got I think but cheers for the info Quote Link to post
Tracy Priestnall 83
had five griffons and several crosses ten years ago, superb hounds. regular stayed on a fox for over an hour. hunted mainly on waste land, drive and non-stop work rate. too much for some. all off valentines stock, 16 inch on average, vary hard going, good voice. beat beagles, welsh, fell, harrier, teckles or foxhounds for finding foxes. true hunting hounds, hunt all day with no huntsmen ! in our area rabbit, hare and deer are vary low in numbers, few distractions for the pack. however they would hunt all game, rat, rabbit, game birds etc. but they would always have fox as 1st priority. stick on fox for long periods. ours were more of the grand verity not the petite, but valentines are almost a new type that differ from French imports. first rate finding dogs, capable of vary long hunts. will stick on and stay on. for the heavy bramble beds we hunt they were superb. like any hound if you don't break them from riot they will riot, to many moan that griffons riot on rabbit but do nothing to stop them ! all hounds will chase rabbits or sheep if you don't give them manners. I rate griffons highly but I do know many who think they are wild, it depends what you do ? what and where you hunt. we hunted in a area thick with fox and little else. our pack on shooting land with rabbit , hare , game birds, or deer would of rioted all day long! is that because they are griffons or un-trained ? before the ban we tried most British hounds in our bobbery pack, the best of the lot...by a country mile were the griffons, pure and cross bred. for finding and hunting threw masses of rough cover and heavy bramble. 1 Quote Link to post
