wullieh 53
out with the dogs today and one ended up with a puncture wound on the first knuckle above her paw she is barely putting any weight on it just now and feeling very sorry for her self but think that is cause she missed the rabbit, how long do you think she will be laid up with this type of injury, it only looks a small wound. skycat 6,173
Puncture wounds in a joint can be very dodgy. firstly there's the risk of infection, as with all puncture wounds, as any bacteria are injected deep into the tissue and hard to clean out properly. I use a syringe, minus needle, and salt water to flush out the wound, doing this with several syringe's worth to try and get as much out as possible. Secondly, there's the risk of the synovial fluid (which is like motor oil to keep the joint moving smoothly) leaking out if the membrane has been punctured, which can compromise the joint's mobility and ultimately, in the long term, cause arthritic changes. Watch out for heat and swelling: infection. If you don't know what caused the wound and the joint swells, then I'd use a good long acting antibiotic jab, or a course of antibiotics. There's also the possibility that there may still be a foreign body in the wound: bit of thorn, stick, even wire or other. If the swelling and pain don't come down within a few days it may need an x-ray. Quote Link to post
whitefeet4190 1,725
Get a tube of mastitis cream from a farmer it' comes in a injection type tube, u squirt it up a cows teat when it has got mastitis, I use this every time on lurchers and terriers and it works very quickly, stops infection it's really good Atb 1 Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
You can also get it from large animal vets: my vets let me have it, although it is not registered for dog use, so they have to warn me. Depends how good your relationship is with your vet. Quote Link to post
BORDERSCOT 3,816
It'll take as long as it takes... A good dog man once told me that "once you think a dog has healed and is good to go...wait another week...and then you'll be about right..." It's good advice..... 3 Quote Link to post
