jsennitt 2
I am looking at getting a small lurcher for rabbiting and lamping rabbits too, temperament wise which cross would be easiest for me to train, calmer and generally less of a handful but still work well. Don't want to bite off more than I can chew. I'm looking at whippet size. Not interested in fox. Any advice would be good, thanks. Quote Link to post

jsennitt 2
My mates have got all sorts, most run deerhound or bull crosses but the two lads that I mainly go out with have a whippet and a small whippet x lurcher, the whippet seems the better of the two but I don't know if that's just a coincidence. I didn't want to pick a breed just based on those two. Quote Link to post
the big chief 3,099
If I had my time again and wanted a small rabbit dog I think I'd skip the collie for your first lurcher, i'd go for a whippet or beddy/terrier x whippet. You can still train them to a decent standard and you might avoid having to get into dog psychology lol. The word 'calm' doesn't really suit some of the collie crosses I've seen (certainly not mine). There are much more experienced fella's on here to tell you different but don't think a collie is the easy option. If you can get out with a few different dogs it might give you a good indicator of what you're looking for exactly. ATB Joe beddy x can be too head strong both of mine where Quote Link to post
Cleanspade 3,322
just look for something bred for the job in mind. and spend plenty of time and effort on it. dont worry to much about whats in the mix. it will be what you make it. good luck 1 Quote Link to post
alan81 110
a terrier/whippet can be very head strong which is only natural its half terrier. a whippet x collie/grey would be a better choice imo, its only 1/4 collie so not to much brains to make him difficult but still more than the terrier brings. Hot Meat 3,109
They don't come more laid back an chilled as a whippet as a general breed, you hardly know you got 1 till it's time to go out I found. An they are a riddle to train an keep fit, your call tho. Any whatever you choose 1 Quote Link to post
