Advice Needed For Beginner.

Recommended Posts

I am looking at getting a small lurcher for rabbiting and lamping rabbits too, temperament wise which cross would be easiest for me to train, calmer and generally less of a handful but still work well. Don't want to bite off more than I can chew. I'm looking at whippet size. Not interested in fox. Any advice would be good, thanks.

I'm not knocking collie x's, I've had a few and my first dog was a collie x. They are easy to train, but they pick up bad habits just as quick as good ones. Some dogs with half or more collie can easi

My mates have got all sorts, most run deerhound or bull crosses but the two lads that I mainly go out with have a whippet and a small whippet x lurcher, the whippet seems the better of the two but I don't know if that's just a coincidence. I didn't want to pick a breed just based on those two.

If I had my time again and wanted a small rabbit dog I think I'd skip the collie for your first lurcher, i'd go for a whippet or beddy/terrier x whippet. You can still train them to a decent standard and you might avoid having to get into dog psychology lol. The word 'calm' doesn't really suit some of the collie crosses I've seen (certainly not mine). There are much more experienced fella's on here to tell you different but don't think a collie is the easy option. If you can get out with a few different dogs it might give you a good indicator of what you're looking for exactly. ATB Joe

If your pals whippet can do the job local, and you can bare to look at a Puney wee dog. Then it's a no brainer really....

I only joking about the puney bit....... or was I lol

Yeah I thought that but i just wanted a bit of insight from some experienced guys, I just really don't want to pick a breed that's too hard to train as a first lurcher.
