An Hour Out With My Son Hunting Charlie

Recommended Posts

Tonight I'd promised my son he could lamp for me so we donned our cammo clothing and went out with the Howa 243.

Headed straight down to my 2nd high seat - against a tree and it's covered in false widows! Great!

So there we stood, me squeaking and son lamping on and off.

Saw Charlie but he was being cautious!

Had a conversation going with Charlie and he kept moving. We weren't the wrong side of the wind but someone on another field was banging off shots.

Spotted Charlie again so gave another squeak to which my boy says"dad, what do you sound like a duck?"

Well at that moment he had a point but still Charlie went further round on us, being cagey!

We moved position and squeaked again, a proper one came out this time!

Charlie had moved so we headed to my 1st seat near the stable (no horses in it) but it too had a load of false widows on it. I'm arachnophobic so that was a no no!

Some more squeaks but Charlie wasn't budging so we gave it a few minutes.

Starting yo rain now and my son had been late to bed the last few nights so in we came.

Saw a rabbit but really wasn't going to hit it with a 243 85 grain object from 50 yards!

Another night and we'll get Charlie.

It was nice to be out with my son, who find a great job lamping for me!

Back in the warmth and he's had great delight in telling "mum" that I had a conversation with a fox in duck speak!

Ho hum!

They don't seem to be fatal unless your allergic but they do seem to be reported as producing some bad reactions locally in some people. Probably best avoided and if you find a nest destroy it.

That's just the media scaring folks again like it's been said if you listen to these folks you wouldn't go out

Now don't get me talking about nat/mosquito bites drive me fecking mad with the itching I literately rip my skin off

False widows - nothing a blow torch wouldn't solve, no need to be scared, just cautious.

For sure they are potentially extremely dangerous. Wait until they mate with something bigger that we have and if they become an aggressive species.
