sussex 5,777
I looked over one of my places this morning & although I never see any deer there was lots of fresh slot , both does & buck. They were obviously using the place it was just a case of finding out when .I had to go over to a mates place but would be back by three ,home just twenty minutes later than planned , I only needed to pick up the 6.5,the dog & bag of bits (bins ,r/finder etc) the farm just a mile up the road I was out stalking by 3.45.Weather wise it was warm ,bright & still ,I couldn't feel a breath of wind . I set of through the campsite field (now closed) and stayed close to the wood to the end ,looked left into the paddock ...nothing ,I cut right along the hedge all the time glassing the field to my right , for some reason the deer never seem to feed here ,its right next to the paddock that is a favourite feeding station & like the paddock is surrounded by woodland but they just don't seem to like it .As I got to the bottom of the hedge I was deciding which way to go ,as there was no wind to force a decision it was really a case of go were you fancy ...turned right into the field staying tight to the wood I made my way down to a long narrow field at right angles to me , 100m from the bottom ,some movement ,a single pricket emerged from the wood ,it wasn't in any hurry & just picked its way along the hedge ,there was no shot as the scrub & weeds were to high to chance a shot ,the last thing I wanted was a wounded animal .I watched it walk out of the field & turn right .Do I turn round & go back , parallel with the deer or carry on ..I fancied he was going back to the paddock ,so was I ,dropping just in the wood I made my way back , stopping a couple of times to check his progress I was well in front ,reaching the paddock I glassed it just in case ,two does .This could chuck a spanner in the works ,they were over the far side ,were I had first come in ,slowly making my way to the seat I kept 10 m in the wood until I was virtually beneath the seat ,the does had hardly moved ,getting up unseen was the next problem ,made worse by the dog who had sat down & started to tremble ..a sure sign there were deer close by .I froze , sure enough two more does hopped over the fence, along with a fawn 40 m further down ,as they trotted out going across right to left there was more movement from the same place ..a buck , fairly big , fish tailed head jumped the fence & tore of after the girls who were know at about 130m out in the field ,resting the sticks against the legs of the seat I ended any chance of him getting any more friendly with the girls .As the 6.5 hit he jumped ,took of but collapsed almost instantly . We watched & waited there was no movement , checked , I went for the quad...SHITE..i took the ramps out at my mates place to make a wheel barrow ramp & forgot to load them back in the motor .....There was no way the quad was coming out .....pulling a big buck 300m up an incline at my age ,fat ,and unfit is not on my list of favourite things but it had to be done ,& done it was ...so was I ...I gralloched it at home ,washed him out & put him to bed in the chiller with a tag saying he weighed 138lb ... 2 Quote Link to post
