acculead 32
hi there, whilst up on one of my permissions the other day, i passed a comment to the farmer that i hadent spotted a single rabbit there, he told me that the rabbit ppulation was all but wiped out with myxomatosis a year or so ago ...... not good news and hoping the population will soon grow so i can get back to the shooting ... anyone else had this type of thing happen on a permission ??? Craig Fosse 286
It happened quite regularly on my permission in England, they find away back in but takes a season a so, in my view it's nature doing its own bit of cleansing, however it's down to the hunter to now manage the growth if them again or u will just wipe them out completely of u keep shooting as well Quote Link to post
The one 8,463
Get a wee touch of it on one of my permission in late August try to hit the myxi ones hard to see if the rest can produce a healthy litter and give us some sport over the winter Quote Link to post
Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
Myxi wiped out one of my permissions a few years ago, such a shame really it was a nice small permission to stalk on always bagged a few. Quote Link to post
davedavedave 69
Mine got wiped out in 1998 by rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) and never really recovered :-( Quote Link to post
MarcFloyd 18
My other permission, small one, has been almost wiped out a few years ago. Some parts of it are still abandoned. On some we have quite a few rabbits. Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,587
My permission was badly wiped out with Myxy about 5 years or so ago and the disease has been making it's horrible appearance again over the last two years reducing the rabbit population from recovering in strength further. Add in the last two severe winters we've had and this has combined to keep their recovery low in numbers. The fields of corn and barley this summer have not suffered anything like the scoffing damage I've seen before. Just the field corners have had a bit of a nibbling. The rabbits I've shot here this summer are beautifully healthy thank God. But, the numbers I'm seeing scampering about in the distances are nothing like they were 5 years ago. I've been so fed up of shooting blind and scraggy, mottled rabbits enduring such barbaric suffering this last couple of seasons. It's an outrage to humanity to inflict this on a such a little animal. 1 Quote Link to post
Craig Fosse 286
Complete agree mate, it's a horrible thing to see and I for one are just glad that at least I can do something about it by at least ending their suffering in as clean a way as possible 1 Quote Link to post

pianoman 3,587
I'm not a softy (well, maybe a bit), but, something angry really gets to me when I've seen a season start with beautiful, healthy young rabbits in peak condition and I'm looking forward to shooting some fair sport for the pot through the summer; only to see them end up being head-swollen, stumbling about blinded and suffering Hell on Earth. It may make farmers happy that their crops aren't being eaten up, and I completely understand that. No problem. But I hate cruelty and suffering to an animal deeply. And this is fcuking cruel. No other way to say it. Quote Link to post
