Tight Beam Or Wider Beam?

Recommended Posts

if its already 400yrds away when slip how far is it by the time the dog gets with it if it runs the opposite way?

What??? I never said I slipped at 400 yards, read it properly.

But, historically, when we used to be able to lamp foxes, you'd often find that your quarry would hold position until the dogs were near. Usually only running as the dogs became silhouetted in the beam.

It's a shame you never got to experience running the big stuff as you'd have known that. Damn this bloody ban!!!

Very long way 200 yard ,,, even on the flattest of fields,,,I'm not saying it's not impossible,,, but it's right at the edge of the working distance....   Anybody that doesn't believe me,,,, go pac

With the beam its up to the man who is lamping and what the dog is used to runing as to long slips there is nothing wrong in testing your dog now and again in my eyes its no good giving them on a plat

long slips with a dog that kniws the game is idealy what i like best, gets and keeps dogs fit, young dogs are best taken as close as possible, moon aint too bad if wind an rain is out but on clear cal

out the beam unless you on a horse/quad or in a jeep lol thats how far, not many places here i could slip at 250+ yds and then still expect to catch unless its caught out the beam, i need some real big flat fields i think, oh aye and a deerhound and a fancy lamp lol

You should move to Sussex and get up on the downs or get some permission on a golf course with big fairways.

You could buy a proper lamp too but I think a deerhound x would be wasted on you.

Agree with that, or if they do run early they don't seem to go flat out. Until they see what's coming.....

Wondering off topic though........

I use a Nightmaster 800 in red. I get eyeshine from fox and deer at 400+ yards. Rabbits are easily identified out to 250 yards. The reflection from their eyes with the red LED is superb. There's a few blokes on here that have seen my dog run and seen my lamp work. If the fella lamping can't see that far, then that's a different thing altogether! My range estimation is pretty good and is made all the easier when I'm on my golf course permission, due to the distance markers. I'm sure of my distances.

My dogs a deerhound x, he won't strike at a rock, I doubt he'd run one. He's got brains.

so he don't take squatters then :laugh:

Does your dog strike at anything that you put the lamp on? Did you drop him on his head as a puppy?

no just trained them to run the beam, have you never lamped a rabbit arse on :laugh:

Here's a lesson for you, on a golf course there are markers every hundred yards from the tee to the green. Even someone like you would be able to judge distance.

So evry time you go out,,, it's on a golf course,, and there's fairway markers,, with game sat next to them so you know the exact distance,,,,,your a funny bloke,,lol

get real ,,, just admit,, your wrong about the distances,, get it off your chest ,,, you'll feel better for it ;)

I don't quite understand what you're saying. Because you've trained your dog to run the beam, he'll strike at rocks because they look like arse on bunnies. What happens if there's a rock 20 yards in front of the rabbit? Does the dog grab the rock and miss the bunny?

This have invasive avian species written all over it!! That was a load of old nonsense as well!

No, that's not what I said. I know how to judge distance. I was just reinforcing the point to you.

I know what the distances are and have witnesses. If you feel upset because you've got a mediocre dog, that's understandable but don't take it out on me.

simple im 6ft tall the dogs just over 2ft tall, i can see further than the dog due to my height. (if you get lost climb a tree or go to higher ground) now i can put the lamp on what i can see and the dog will go to the end of the beam because he knows theres likely to be something there. or are you saying your dog stops sniffs, turns its head torch on then makes the decision to pick it up or not

Nope, I'm not saying that, I refer you to your earlier comment claiming that my dog would lose its teeth on a rock. I was just pointing out that my dog isn't stupid enough to do that.

To be fair she is just mediocre,,,and like I said there no way she would go that distance,,,, but you and I both know,,, your wrong about the distances,,,that's nowt to do with the dogs,,,,

I'm only playing and shouldn't be digging your dog out. It's not her fault that you're the way you are! Lol!

My dog is slipped at that distance when needed and makes up the ground and gets his quarry. If you want to come and see, you're more than welcome.

That LED torch is fantastic, I was lamping behind a LF 170 the other week without a filter and I was picking up bunnies eyes that the LF didn't show.
