AirgunGuy 362
My max bench press before giving up through illness was 3 plates, a 10kg and a couple of 2 1/2's a side plus olympic bar so that's approx 170kg...3 sets flat 6-8 reps...3 sets incline 6-8 reps and then onto flat and incline flyes. I'm 5'10'ish...at the time was 205'ishlbs and 7% body fat. I didn't do dead lifts and wasn't very strong on quads.

Lab 10,979
110kg B/P 180kg D/L And I physically just can't do squats properly. I actually can't even squat properly without a bar ffs, my body just doesn't allow it. Go 4/5 times a week and had 2 weeks off for holiday and now it feels like starting again. I have strong shoulders, decent enough arms but my mates are pissing on me on the chest.... Work to be done!!!!!
gnasher16 30,217
Has your gym not got a Smiths Machine Lab ?..............Todays machines are smooth as anything and perfect for squatting as it does the balancing for you....................unless your competing in strongman dont get too wrapped up in numbers its more about how you lift not how much you lift

Basically it's an old school gym I go too now. I gave up the council run one about 9 months ago. Although it had all the new mod cons it didn't have very heavy weights. Now I pay half the price but the equipment is dated....things like Alan keys to select your weights sort of gym.... Lol But in 6 months at this gym I got so much stronger than a year at the old one. I see what your saying about numbers, but it kind of pissed me off gradually getting stronger and stronger and then last few weeks I feel I have went back the way. Basically I tried to cut weight to look my best for my summer holiday, I lost a stone and a half but think I lost muscle too..:-(
TAXI DRIVER 549
Is that raw or equipped ?.......Good standard of lifting that not far off British level....................not quite sure how your squatting more than your deadlifting though ..........I spent a few years competing back years ago my lifts were pretty similar to yours at slightly less bodyweight......its not for me though im very strong across the chest and shoulders but the back lets me down these days in any type of squat/dead.......i rarely do max lifts any more but i,ll regularly bench 160/165 for reps......squat 200 and dead 220 all for reps.............i come into my own in the shoulder/arm movements rather than the powerlifting 3 Raw mate.I`ve been taking my weight training a bit more serious since finishing playing rugby but have never competed.I agree that max lifts aren`t a good thing too often and will bring on the overtraining syndrome quicker.I tend to do a lot of cardio/walking the dogs etc which will also affect my performance in the gym.Anyway.....it`s all good fun. AirgunGuy 362
If you're lacking in a certain muscle it's always good to train with someone that's strong on it. I used to train with a wee bloke who for his height he was in amazing shape though lacked shoulders where i was very strong on shoulders and had no problem getting them to grow. I couldn't get my arms any bigger than 18" and my bicep was short and his bi's were superb so he trained with me on shoulders and i trained with him on bi's and it made a huge difference. He was aware that he was lacking in shoulders and would bang on the weight but his form went to f**k. I lowered his weight and got his form spot on and it worked. Likewise when he trained me on biceps. Worked for both of us.

Anyway well in mate your sticking at it ......most people who are going to quit usually do so in the first 6 months.....so your on the way now.

Not so much for overtraining.......just injuries plain and simple.......and what does a 1 rep max lift actually give you ? apart from showing off with numbers ................over the years ive found once you can do away with your ego being in gyms becomes so much more interesting
AirgunGuy 362
I was always led to believe that machines could be bad for you...especially the Smith Machine though I always done shoulder presses on it. I have bad shoulders now. Whether it's down to wear and tear from years of work or from the training I don't know. I did get a small, niggling shoulder injury when I was bench pressing and had to go light for a while. I think free weights are always better but when training alone the Smith Machine for shoulder presses was always easier.

There is 2 new state of the art gyms being built as we speak mate. They have got everything you need and more so we might move next year when our membership is up. Still enjoying it.... I train with 2 other lads so it works well if one of us can't manage. Just started again with my protein shakes and supplements....can still see me doing this 20 years from now. Great feeling when I meet people who I haven't seen for a while and they notice changes, makes it all worth while....:-)
