alan81 110
you have a dm on your .17 and your 243 does that mean any mod will fit any gun? or is it not that simple? Quote Link to post

Deker 3,478
http://www.shootingtimes.co.uk/guns/253448/Fullbore_sound_moderators.html This may give you some ideas, there isn't much to chose between them all in sound moderation, just size/weight and price. Most people will simply tell you what they have is BEST, whatever best may actually mean! Quote Link to post
stillair1 16
In hindsight would go for something that can be stripped and or is of stainless construction. I would also consider what size you are putting on the end especially if it is a light weight barrel as they do affect the balance. Quote Link to post
alan81 110
thanks for your replies lads I have a better idea now anyway. Quote Link to post

Alsone 789
thanks for your replies lads I have a better idea now anyway. I know, you have just seen Shooter on Freeview and you're going to try an empty plastic coke bottle! Or a pillow / cushion seems to be the other Hollywood favourite. I was just wondering if his local Dunelm Mill had a run on cushions / pillows. Quote Link to post
craig barton 18
you have a dm on your .17 and your 243 does that mean any mod will fit any gun? or is it not that simple? I have the same make of mod on each gun but you can get 1 mod which will fit others if the treads are the same Quote Link to post
The Seeker 3,048
I went for the wildcat 8 n both my centrefires, they reason being is it was affordable and also I could strip it down to clean it when needed. My only problem with the wildcat is its quite large. My mate has the PES and I can recommend that also Quote Link to post
dadioles 68
you have a dm on your .17 and your 243 does that mean any mod will fit any gun? or is it not that simple? I think that statement could cause a bit of confusion..... The DM80 is so named because it was made by a delightful chap called David Mercer. A DM80 can be made to suit several different calibres and the main difference is the size of the hole through the middle of it that allows the bullet free passage. Think of DM80 as a "make" rather than a specific moderator, they are not all identical. I have DM80 moderators on all of my guns but they are all different. I could, al least in theory, fit my .22 calibre DM80 onto my .17 calibre HMR as the "hole" is bigger. Incidentally, the much talked about SAK moderator is .22 calibre and frequently used on .17 hmr. If I fitted my .17 calibre DM80 onto my .22lr the results would be quite expensive and interesting as the larger bullet tried to punch its way out through a hole which is too small for it. Possibly, and this is purely a guess, you could have a moderator for .223 and use it on .22 and .17 as they are smaller calibres. It is not something I would do. Generally, a moderator is calibre specific. The DM80 is an excellent moderator and part of it fits over the barrel so the overall length of the barrel is not extended too much. The outside diameter of the barrel needs to be taken into account with over barrel types as well as the amount of barrel sticking out beyond the end of the stock. Dave made a "special" DM80 for my 14" barrel Anschutz .17hmr as there was not much barrel sticking out beyond the woodwork. In the case of rimfire, there is not a huge difference in sound moderation from one make / type of moderator to another. What you are paying for is weight / looks / quality of construction and materials. Get something that can be easily stripped down and cleaned. Take the advice of others as far as bigger calibres are concerned, I only have rimfire. Edited September 22, 2013 by dadioles Quote Link to post
Yokel Matt 918
A Tec and ASE are two good makes to looks at. Both have reflex and end on models, some of which are ultra light weight and strippable. Predator were quieter IMO but are old tech now and I think the weight advantage of the new generation of competitors is going to make them obsolete soon. Quote Link to post
