Mine get worked hm and so do many others on hear the land i work is a mixture of small to very large fields i manage more than a couple of hundred i wont have one to parade around wtf is the point of that use it as it was intended to be used that's what i say

I have a malamute x grey with maybe saluki in the mix but not 100% on that. He will run any ground and is a big strong dog which is as I like. I am very interested in this x because I'm thinking of getting a pup this time next year so this is why I asked the question. And so far I think the lads who own a deerhound x seem happy enough.

Mine doesn't win shows and won't chase a lure but he pays for his keep. He can be at top speed within 5 strides. So he can run anywhere.

without nit picking or trying to piss anybody off, how many have actually got this type an use it other than to put up pretty pics an parade it about on a lead cos it looks like the romantic lurcher type? anything less than a good few hundred bunnys a season at the very least and you may aswell have lurchers imo as lets face it not many are running the land they was designed for never mind quarry.....

I have one of these, still a pup at the moment. I don't expect her to clock up "a good few hundred bunnies a season". I have a lurcher for bunnies. She wasn't bought to look pretty either though I hope she looks prettier than your avatar.

well mr ferret lucky you, but on this island we cant, we are stuck to bunnys, what im getting at, is instead a all sitting talking about it, why not get real, get a list of dogs that are grafting, and what they are grafting then use these dogs to improve/keep the qualities yous want. i like the type but the guys that are all over the net advertising litters dont graft them. no matter what anybody says, would i have another, i suppose i would if it come off grafters that were bred to try an improve the type, and not a bug plodding donkey....

The ban as made the more sensible fly lower under the radar than others.Some keep lurchers as companion animals and a day at the shows is the nearest they get to hunting owners or dogs,nothing wrong with that as long as its kept honest.Others want a certain type to work a certain way,with little interest in others opinions,how it should be.When people come on these sites and blather about dogs not doing what their breeding intended,because they have not seen it,thats just pish,the vast majority of what most get up to with their chosen type never comes to others attention,as most work within the confines of the law and common sense,it possibly never will,hopefully.

Hotmeat,I know what you're saying. I'd prefer if mine didn't get any bigger than 29 inches and 27 to 28 would be ideal, in spite of what Gaffer says.

There are two things though, that are more important than height. First and foremost a gutsy temperament and second a strong build. (good bone and muscle,strong feet and no narrow chests, weak necks etc.)

It seems on this thread some posts are referring to pure deerhounds and others to deerhound xs.

 

Mine deerhound lurcher is 27tts and has a drop of beddy blood.

 

He will do the job of a rabbiting whippet x, foxing bull x, and a daytime saluki x. He has early pace and blistering top end. Grit and determination by the bucket load.

 

But the penny didnt drop till at least 18 months. Now at 3 and a half, he doest miss much.

i did say a few hundred bunnys at the very least, im not askin folks to admit to anything else, but aye your right, honesty is gonna be paramount, its pointless making out your dog does anything other than it can do, itll only come out in the end. i dont think folk should be too quick to seperate the pure from the crosses, imo itll take the crosses to improve the pures, if a group of like minded folks got together and were HONEST about there dogs and what they want in future, then id be intrested in helping out, but imo honesty and the future of the type should come first an not money and reputations, ole doxhope done it right as far as i could see, treat them like what rhey are, lucher, working dogs....

hm.......... the thing is although looks can kill, this thread was started on the discussion side of the forum, knowledgable owners / members were discussing deerhounds and their x's as well as the faults and merits of both, some folk do work their dogs regularily, some have decades of knowledge of both breeding and working them others dream and bitch

birddog iv tried them, and liked them, if they are bred decent and not too big, but i aint gonna lie about them just because i like them. who really cares what they look like, get a line or 2 breeding right an getting grafted properly and i bet the looks will follow.

Hotmeat, I don't understand what what your trying to say? Are you suggesting that we try to improve the deerhound as a breed, or get a good line of working deerhound xs going?
