having been a fan for decades i see a time nearing when the show v working type have as big a difference as show v working / racing greyhound, granted the show guys are breeding more to an almost wolf

i can trace mine back i think on the deerhound / lurcher side 8 generations or so and obviously more on the greyhound side, they've all worked way pre ban but thats not the point of this thread, altho

i wonder if its us hunting guys that can take some of the blame..........looking for faster racier types, maybe throwing too much greyhound into the mix, maybe losing build and substance in the pursuit of a hare catching type ?

there was a thread a couple of weeks ago i think and reading some of my doggy history stuff..............i wonder if dna testing the modern deerhound would throw up any surprises ? theories abound have the show folks used borzoi or wolfhound blood ?.............would the collie and foxhound blood of yesteryear show up ?

gibbo, smart hound mate like him lots  did you get sorted with a lamp ?

It's a interesting subject hey Birddog, but Wolfhound. The wolfhound was a re created breed which used Deerhound in its recreation, unless you are talking before the wolfhound died out, and maybe that's why they used it in the re creation?

The 'Scottish Greyhound as its refered to in many books' is a very old breed compared to many breeds. What ever is in the mix way in the past I agree it adds that 'something' to a lurcher, which I like.

But from what I have read the size for a bitch which was considered best for hunting was between 26-29 inchs. To see a 26" bitch Deerhound these days its pretty rare indeed if at all.

Some books you may find interesting, if you haven't already read them are - CASSELS, Kenneth. A most perfect creature of Heaven (great book on working Deerhounds here and abroad)

For breed history Scottish Deerhounds and their Masters by George Cupples is good.

I am pretty sure from Memory (Stonehenge *Pen name for John Henry Walsh*) wrote some words on the breeds history in the 1800's also, but I cant remember which book of the top of my head, but I remember it being interesting.

There is also a few bits in other books written my Miss Noble which again are also interesting.

bird dog and jigsaw its a bitch I have , she around 27 " 60 lb in weight ,

ive not got lamp sorted ,my keeper mate has 2 x 210s and said I could borrow one but ive used

it on the back of his truck and im not keen on the size

I think im going to just get a metal reflector and keep the 50 w bulb in as when phoned clulite

he just said 100 w bulb is just brighter and beam the same length around 1000 meters an the 210s are

800 m so not gaining nothing

sirius, that old pic is a belter and not too dissimilar to 'gafer's' dog, i hope for the breeds sake that some kc guys are reading this

its well documented that deerhound blood was used to recreate the wolfhound but gossip and whispers aside how else is the big size increase of the deerhound in (fairly) recent years explained ? ignoring politics and the ban, it would be good to see the kc alter the standard to something more fit for purpose or put guys with working knowledge of the breed in positions of authority but i don't see mrs blah de blah whatever in her spotless tweeds being replaced by mr torn arsed jeans however better their understanding of the breeds history, function or the conformation and temperament required in a worker

I am sure the odd person might read this ;) However The rise in height I am sure is not down to introduction of another breed at all, its just breeding bigger dogs to bigger dogs and sadly this is determined by what wins in the shows not what performs best in the field. Simply people tend to breed dogs to the style that are winning, and here is where the rot sets in. ;) If you look at the breed standard there is only a minimum height, no maximum so quite literally 'the sky is the limit' http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/services/public/breed/standard.aspx?id=1015

Or look here http://www.deerhound.co.uk/breed-standard/standard.htm - Height - As tall as possible consistent with quality.

Unfortunately with all dogs that no longer have a job, its very hard to breed for function if not enough people are using the dog for that function and have the drive to improve it, once the ban came in the dogs have not really seriously been used for coursing hares (which of course was not their TRUE function, but at least it was a test of sorts.

However I will stick with my scruffy bitza cur for now
