staffyspen 43
Hi all, As the ferreting season is just beginning, bad weather and thick cover needs cutting back in looking to get some warm, waterproof, thornproof wax gear, jacket and trousers. Obviously barbour would be my option if money was no problem, but looking at some cheaper, yet still tough and keep me dry/warm. Anyone use the dickies gear, thicking this may do the job but dont want to be soaked in sweat if they are not breathable? Or anyone recommend anything else? Regards Quote Link to post
Country Joe 1,411
Dont know your type of ground, but on mine theres lot of hedges, sometimes have to get on the old knees to lay nets, and there can be thorn, I just look on ebay for older type wax jackets, even if the have a tiny hole somewhere it doesn't matter, as long as they are cheap. Or buy the cheapest wax jacket you can. Dont buy top of the range new, like Barbour, as you could rip or hole your new jacket easy. buy a pair of wax leggings, again not top of the range, warm clothes underneath, a decent pair of wellies or boots and a bunnet. brucemyster 75
I've got dickies wax chaps and they are lasting pretty well, they're on their second season of blackthorn and bramble and are still water and thorn proof, mind you I'm going to get treggings next as could do without a wet butt every now and then, I always buy a cheap wax from a bootfair as jackets are easily ripped, a fiver on my last wax jacket and it's still going strong, a decent pair of wellies is a good investment but again some of the lesser known brands are well worth a punt, I'm wearing wyre valley neoprene boots and I find them very comfortable and to this point durable as well, I admit I would like a pair of chameau's but would be constantly worried about ripping a hole in them on the many barbed wire fences which have to be traversed. You do get what you pay for but it's like shopping at Aldis there is a lot of crap there but you can pick up the odd gem every now and then Quote Link to post
staffyspen 43
Cheers guy's, ground is hedgerows, thick golf course rough so talking blackthorn, brambles, nettles etc. Got some decent hunter wellies, piled on the layers over the last few seasons but crawling under thorn, still penertrates into knees and elbows so decent wax is my upgrade!! GreyRake 108
My wax coat is made by 'Duncan Honeyman LTD' not sure about prices, had it for years. Just put my back to the wind and rain and I'm toasty inside. I need to get knee pads, good reminder. Edited September 16, 2013 by GreyRake Quote Link to post
