For Fogs Sake !

Recommended Posts

Decided last night to stalk my place just up the road to me as I had an appointment at 9.30 I couldn't miss .so never had to get up silly o'clock , 5am would do ,all the kit was still loaded from last night so it was quick coffee grab the dog &gun & we would be of ..walked outside , couldn't see a hand in front of you ! thick fog ...my place sits in a slight dip by a river so the fog/mist tends to hang there , hopefully further up the road it might not be as bad ..

A mile up the road it was better but not as clear as I would have wanted , their was no wind ,quite warm & muggy .Being so close to home I almost turned round & called it a day but thought I would have a look anyway .Parking in the camping ground ,the farmer uses one of his fields for touring caravans/tents from june to the end of august,i walked across to my favourite field ,more often than not their is deer in it & this morning was no exception , 4 or 5 deer were in the middle of the field but I couldn't make out if they were bucks or does ,my gut instinct said does ,I stood and watched them slowly edge towards me for ten minutes or so , they were does .Just as I decided to back of another shape appeared in the mist grazing /walking towards the does. A buck ...the field rises slightly so I new I had backstop but couldn't be sure if their were any deer in the mist so couldn't take the chance of a shot ,he was no more than 60 m away & if he kept coming another 15m he was on , at which point he stopped , turned round & walked back into the mist ..deciding their wasn't going to be another chance I cut back towards the motor ,right into the wood & followed the track out to the power lines ,below these lines is mowed a couple of times a year and provides a clear passage for deer , people & 6.5 softpoints .Working my way down the ride the mist was now lifting slightly , as I edged downhill staying as tight as I could to the cover about 80m down on the same side of the clearing I glassed the head of a deer ....two spindly antlers had put him in the frame for a bad morning .I sat down & rested my back against a tree stump , bipod open I watched him for a few minutes before he decided it was safe to cross the ride ,two steps out he stopped to see who was whistling at him .That was the last thing he heard .. I walked over to check him ,their was no movement ,on closer inspection he had 2 or 3 deep cut to his flank ,probably barb wire ,apart from that he was in great condition , gralloched & on the quad we headed home .Washed out & tagged he went 77lb in the chiller,The kidneys ,some liver & two fresh eggs was a fitting end to the mornings activities..
