I get on with my Dad really well now, my childhood was a bit different and I blamed him for a lot, to be honest I struggled to like him at times, my mum was solid... My dads best mate showed me everything I love now, fishing, hunting etc.. He was my father figure I guess as a kid and I miss him like mad now...

But as I've grown older I realise that life ain't black and white, there's reasons for everything, good or bad, sometimes things are out of your control... Lots of things have happened but that's life..

My dad is a great grandfather and the kids love him to death, I think he makes up for things in a way..

My dad would do anything for me and my brother, and I talk to him pretty much every day, I'm glad we've got the relationship we have now....

But my kids upbringing will be very different...

My dad is 70. He can get on my nerves at times but all he wants is his lads to go fishing with him. I am the only one out of the three of us that does it :(

I've suggested it to my brothers but they can't be arsed...one even said at his birthday that he was going to take him sea fishing but never did. I don't hate my brothers but I am not going to sooth their guilt when it is too late.

Had a strange old relationship with the ol fella,we had our ups and downs over the years he was a good strong honest law abiding mans man who achieved things through dedication and hard work....................he never said as much but i think i was probably an embarassment to him if truth be told.......but we only get one i suppose and i,ll always be grateful to the ol boy.

Always found the father/son relationship fascinating myself.

Though I don't work away the hours spent working are just silly and when I look back I realise ive managed to miss every major event in my kids lives trying damned hard to change that though

Me and my old man are like chalk and cheese,he has no interest in the outdoors/animals/hunting/fishing etc,he was a physics teacher (now retired)and although he would stand his ground with anyone in a confrontation he has never had a fight in his life, hes a real honest good natured law abiding type. Most of my mates dads were rough arses allways in the pub and fighting etc....looking back I think he thought I would rather he was like that, but couldn't be further from the truth,I could drop him in a room full of you lot, absolutely no common interests ,and would guarantee you would all say what a cracking bloke he is,no ego at all, doesnt think he or anybody else is better than anyone else regardless of background etc etc When I ran my own business a lot of the work was local, soon as they saw my surname on my business card it would be "is ******* your dad,hes such a lovely man" nobody ever has a bad word for him.We are VERY close ,hes stood by me through a lot of shit (mostly of my own making) and never wavered, the best role model I could have and a better man than Ill ever be....one of my favourite memories was when a big fight erupted in a busy town centre, meand my brother in law fighting with 5 lads,a further few ran out of a pub to join in my dad (all 5"6 and 10st of him ) shouted at them "stay there, stand back "etc, etc like he was still a school teacher and guess what ....they did  these meat heads stood pretty much in a row ,as if outside his office at school  And whenever I took a bird home after the pub,Id give him a nod,hed yawn and say to my mam, cmon ****** its time to go up :toast: and my mam would scowl at me and disappear :boogy: my hero and wingman
